I wanted to get people's thoughts on geotagging nature and landscape shots.

I've been providing latitude and longitude information recently on most of my nature/wildlife shots so that anyone else who wishes to observe the same bird, especially rare visitors could do so. But in a lot of cases, especially on FM, people have been really cagey about revealing even cursory information about where they shot a particular photo. Even among birders there, I sense that people don't necessarily want to reveal the location of their favorite beach or watering hole where they got that rare bird shot (a response I once got on a query about a great bald eagle shot ; "Oh, it's on Vancouver island!" - yeah, thanks for narrowing that down lol..)

I can see how professional photographers don't necessarily want to reveal the location of their vantage point to get that spectacular mountain shot or whatever, so I guess i can understand the reluctance, but for me, as an amateur, it would be just churlish to do the same. I might turn on GPS in the future to make geotagging more easy.

Any thoughts?

If I don't get the shots I want with the gear I have, the only optics I need to examine is the mirror on the bathroom wall. The root cause will be there.

I don't add location data to the EXIF for any shots but almost always answer location questions. I've enjoyed help from great birders and want to pass it along.

I will likely never include GPS data because of the risk of neglecting to delete it when appropriate. An example of that would be shots on private property with hard-won permission from the owner. Another would be nests where human traffic presented potential problems.

Surely it's simply a matter of personal choice?

Some people prefer to keep their "special places" special and be alone there, and I respect that, and some want everyone to know where they took every photo. Why worry about it?

I use the GPS in my camera and post after I get home so people don't figure out I'm away until I'm not. If someone takes a shot 10 years from now from the same vantage, it is sometimes interesting to see the changes.

I'm not at my home computer and don't do well remembering names, but a while back I joined a Goggle site for sharing photos. They had a team that would look at posted entries and if you got "tagged" your image could, if you chose, be "pinned" on Google Earth. It was pretty cool when I'd go to Google Earth and see my stuff popping up!

Of course, there are precautions and reservations about things, but I'm not in the habit of doing "secret" stuff! :) And, on the occasions where someone has stumbled on some work of mine and asks, well, I do enjoy sharing with fellow photogs!

It's funny. though, once I posted a nice shot of a blue heron flying across some wetland, filling up my frame, I had to stop my car and point my camera/lens out of the driver's window, perching the lens on the window sill and tracking the dang Bird In Flight, fun stuff! Anyway, one of our POTN friends came across this shot in Goggle Images, maybe searching for blue heron shots, saw and recognized my shot, and jumped to "warn" me of someone using my photo, but then realized that Goggle Images provides a good public search forum for photos, well, it was all good...no GPS stuff, though! :)
