I'm taking the course from NYIP and the 1st project includes the use of using hyperfocal distance. I'm thinking of this photo, which I took using EFS 10-22 set at an aperture of 22 at 1/50 ISO 400. I focused manually at around 1.5 feet. Unfortunately, I didn't have my tripod with me at the time, so I'm debating whether or not I should try again this afternoon with a tripod and maybe some different angles. I sharpened the image a little bit using high pass and applied a Velvia action that i downloaded after being recommended in another post.

Critique/thoughts/comments really appreciated as this will be my first assignment to turn in.

Ah yes , good old NYIP. I did that in 1983. Good course if your instructor is good at critiquing images (my first one was not so I asked for another, and he was much better.)

Strickly speaking, this image shows the law of hyperfocal distance and if he only judges you on that you're home free. Composition wise this image is a bit lacking, but that will come in time. Exposure looks good also.

According to the lens and camera that you were using, the Hyperfocal distance of 1.5 ft would be correct for a setting of about 14 mm focal length at the f/22 aperture. So, it looks like you nailed the formula.

The composition isn't bad, either. Normally, one would prefer the horizon to be either much higher or much lower in the picture, but that would require cropping or tilting the camera - neither of which is good.

Very nice picture - congratulations!

You probably should have focused on the boat on the left and used f16 or so instead of focusing 18" infront of the lens.
