Hi
I need to buy a service manual, and it says
"comes in DVD format.
All programs come pre-installed on a Virtual PC Image: Simply extract and run! "
is this just a regular DVD, or is it going to try and set up a virtual operationg system.

I thought VMWare was used to sort of be able to run two different OSs?

I am very concerned about messing with Windows 10 as it is unsupported on my laptop by Sony but runs perfectly.

Or is this just a normal DVD with PDf files or something on it?

Any advice very welcome , yes I need this manual, but I dont need trouble with my workstations.

Thanks

Find another source for the manual, a manual should be in PDF format and shouldn't require installation of another piece of software.

VM software is a system for allowing you to create virtual computer instances that run on top of your main OS. You then install a real operating system of your choice into the newly created VM. On a desktop PC, they're great for having access to many different versions of Windows or Linux without having to leave your main OS. In the enterprise, they're good for consolidating computers into less hardware.

I use VirtualBox. If I made a copy of one of my VMs containing Windows XP and mailed it to you on a DVD, you could open it in VirtualBox on your PC. You'd have access to all applications I had installed into it, and even see any documents I had open at the time the image was made.

In your first post, you write "Virtual PC Image". That specific term is a Microsoft technology. They have their own virtualization system. Running a VM doesn't in an of itself harm your main OS, but I'd be extremely suspicious of anyone distributing manuals as a Virtual PC. I have never before seen anyone do that so it sets off alarm bells.

^^^This.
I would suggest to use a non critical computer to extract the manual. Alternatively, you try to identify what you need to extract. Maybe you can do that manually without running a virtual PC?

If you have Windows 10 you can use Hyper-V to virtualize any thing. With VMware workstation will be user friendly also. Personally i have my ESXi 6 Server for virtualization with vCentral. But this is another story...
