Last off week in Florida ISO 800 was high...it's so geographically related.
But M5 related I think it hangs well with higher ISO performance and just as important
to me, cropability.

Now I'm using it I've noticed a few things.
1. Shutter release is not as instant as I like
2. Gimping time is too long
3. Have any of you noticed a sound when you put pressure on front of the grip? It's almost like there
is a button hidden under there!

Things I'm loving
1. EF and EF-S lenses work practically native
2. Size/weight, it's like a 5Diii was put into a shrink machine!
3. EVF is great.

I'd tout the touch screen. I've read it's one of the best in production. I turned mine off.

Much better than my 1d3, haven't been home to see any on a calibrated monitor but as an example see post #127 in this thread - no flash and very dark in the underground tunnels, I'm liking it!

some fairly old canon camera stuff, canon lenses, Manfrotto "thingy", and an M5, also an M6 that has had a 720nm filter bolted onto the sensor:

Compared to ????
1DXii or my T2i :)
It's all relative.
I think the 80D was 1/2-1 stop better than the 70D and honestly I never complained about ISO
performance with the 70D, so if that frame of reference works for you then you'll be pleased with the
M5.
Now here is the thing. Many folks are more sensitive to noise in their pictures.
It's funny (and you probably know this) but if you print an image vast majority of noise simply vanishes!
But everyone is nowadays pixel peeping at 1,000,000 percent just scouring the image for noise.

Now if you go back to the 7D you'll remember the banding noise that you can't do anything with, so I can tell
you already that the M5 doesn't suffer banding at anything normal (like up to 6400).

Just one man's opinion.

I just looked at your post and remember seeing that one. Funnily enough I've never used my 6D that high

I guess my 6D and other crop sensor mirrorless bodies?
I know from what I've seen in reviews, the 80D has much cleaner shadows that previous bodies such as the M3 and 70D which is what interests me.

I can get the M5 at a local store with the 15-45 for only $1367 AUD which is cheaper than buying just the body (Cheapest legit place is $1399) so I may be picking this up tomorrow if I can't control myself :p

I ended up buying it as part of the kit for the price I posted above. Once I sell the M3 kit I will feel less bad about spending the money.

I think it actually came with the EF adaptor which means when I sell it, I can sell that as part of the kit since I already have one.

Free lens! and I kinda like the 14-45 for size reasons alone.
OK, the M5 is NO 6D that's for sure. It's a testament that the 6D still does so well ISO wise compared even to the latest like the 1DXii and Sony A7rii.
Compared to other crops that I have the M5 does well compared to the 7Dii as it should being almost or right at 2 years newer. Compared to the latest Sony crops Sony wins in ISO and DR. Even
Sonys 1 inch sensors (I have RX100v and Poof has RX100iii) the DR is spooky good for such a small sensor.
But from my very limited experience with the M5 it's all moot; which is to say I'm not going to purposefully shoot my A7Rii, the 1DXii, the M5 or anything else at ISO 12,8000!! Who would!
ISO can be a crazy thing. In daylight you can really push it, i.e. when there are no shadows to contend with. Look at this example at ISO 16,000.
https://www.flickr.com …/album-72157675329373941/ (external link)
For research on the abilities of the M5's sensor I'd look to 80D tests until DXO, LensRental, others put out the real scoop.
Me, well I don't buy cameras on spec alone....there is so much more to a camera than that and the M5 is certainly appealing. Def. not for everyone but on days
I'm carrying one of the bigger EOS bodies the M5 is surely to come along.

In my monitoring the impressions of this camera (which I still want, just trying to decide if it's something I really should get or if it's a passing phase), I've noticed these three elsewhere. It sounds like #3 isn't uncommon but maybe not universal.

1 and 2 are a bit disappointing, but you're not the only person to report them. I'd have to try the camera for myself to see if these really impact my usage although I don't know if anywhere local has it to try.

I'm going to blame you for losing another grand (when I end up buying this)... Just sayin' :)

The point-of-no-return for me will probably come down to this question...

I assume you also have the EF to EF-M adapter. Are you saying that the AF performance is holding up to your experience or expectations? My "standard" is the 5D3.

So I played around with the M5 a bit yesterday and I really enjoy using it. I feel like THE DPAF + tracking make it so much easier for someone like me to take portraits wide open. The EVF does take some time to get used to, I really do hope they reduce the saturation of it in a firmware update.

This is a quick shot I took yesterday with the M5

Remember for me to answer I need to compare to something.
I had 5Diii, currently my closest to it is the 5Dsr...is that a fair comparison? If so, comparing the M5 + adapter + EF lens I'm happy with the M5. Comparing to
something like the Oly M1ii mentioned above the M5 is slow, but the Oly costs 2x as much. Now had truth. M5 is a mirrorless and a couple of gens behind Sony in this game. It
is slower by all accounts than the 5Diii or any DSLR. How much slower is the question and that's something I cannot quantitate for you unfortunately. The difference isn't like comparing a Lumix GX8 and an Oly M5 mk ii, where you'd have to be measuring in milliseconds....the difference between the M5 and 5Diii would be in hundredths of seconds......which for me in the real world is not a thing.
I'll throw something else your way. Say I had to shoot BIF with the M5 or the 5Diii. I'd come home with keepers with the 5Diii before I would the M5 but I think I can get BIF with the M5 as long
as they are planning shots. This is something Kai pointed out in the go-carts shots in his review vid and something I agree with.

Now let me tell you why I'm so thrilled with the adapter on the M5 and EF lenses.
For the longest time I was adapting EF lenses to various Sonys via the Metabones. It was always a disappointment. With the M5 it simply works and for a mirrorless
it works well and I have all the AF points possible with the M5.

You have the 5Diii and I think the M5 will be a wonderful 'side-kick'. It I'm going BIF'ing with a 1DXii wearing a long white I'd have the M5 around my shoulder with a wide or normal wide.
The 1DXii fails and I've got a plan B....I'd rather have a 7Dii as plan B but I can only carry so much ;)

Hey, do this. Wait until LensRental has one and go that route before purchasing----or buy via B&H and see if you like. Ship it back if you don't.

Not that the 6D is that bad, but I'm really impressed by the M5 in comparisson to my 6D. The Dual Pixel AF makes a huge difference and I never shoot anything fast moving so these two bodies suit me perfectly and I couldn't be happier.

OK me again .... today at Haumoana, perhaps trying out the Christmas present? With the Sigma 18 - 35 f/1.8. I didn't like the feel of this lens on the small body and will probably use it on the 70D. Working my way through my lenses :-)
