Just an observation but based on my own testing and flicking back through this thread at posted images, it certainly seems that with the exception of 22/2 lens all of the "decent" images taken with the M5 have come from non-EFM lenses

I'm happy with this from the 15 - 45 f/3.5 - 6.3 .... bearing in mind it's a kit lens. I guess you need to decide what you're happy with, and why you'd consider the M5. I'd have to say, that if I really examine my images, then apart from the 22 f/2, and my other faster EF-S and EF glass ,,, some are a bit soft using the 15 - 45. But hey I get to use all my other canon lenses. And exactly what do we expect from kit lenses.

More shots... no model but my wife lend me a hand. :-)

My ONLY ONLY Issue is the focus box is a bit too big for my taste, you can make it smaller than the original one, but i prefer the pinpoint focusing of my bigger bodies like 1dx and 5d3. But IQ is great for this consumer camera.

Shots look good but why not shoot RAW?

Does anyone have a 24-70 f/2.8? I am pretty sure I am going to get one of those and then later this year add a 6dmk2 or 5dmk4. But I am wondering how it looks on a crop camera in the interim.

I'm not seeing the problem you have with the camera from your analysis...the fact that the M5 CAN use nice EF glass makes it an even greater camera. I'm happy to use an excellent (large) high quality lens when I can, and happy to have good unobtrusive lenses to use when I can't.

That being said, this (severely cropped) image was captured using the previous gen M3 with the EF-M 55-200 lens. (M5 wasn't released yet.). It is better than it would have been with the 300L attached to it, simply because I wouldn't have had the camera with me in the cockpit! Physics is a PITA, and high quality tele lenses will always need to be large...

As the old saw goes: "The camera you have with you..." holds true with this image. I certainly don't regret taking it!

(Apologies to all who have seen this picture already.)

If I take enough pictures, at least one of them should turn out...maybe

No RAW Because this camera will not be for professional purposes.... while i shoot RAW on my big cameras, Jpegs will be shot on this because these shots will be for fun, facebook and IG. I already have my hands full editing professional shots for clients..... not wasting my time editing with a "fun" camera.....

Plus with the EVF, its kinda hard NOT to NAIL the shot for JPEG... lol

Yeah I find on all the photography news sites (Fstoppers, Slr Lounge, Petapixel) the commenters usually just criticize without anything constructive to add. It did bother me a bit but some people have commented me on IG with questions and congratulations on getting it posted. I feel like if the people who have the more harsh things to say were that confident in their own work, they would say the same on IG or Flickr where their photos can be seen as well.

Thanks again!

That's so true. I've seen some threads explode over the years where criticism of a picture reaches ridiculous levels. Some people try to show off their knowledge by attempting to 'out criticise' others. The worst of them rarely have their work to hand to back up their opinions.

If your're looking for faults so hard, how can you enjoy a picture for what it is. A shame really. A bit like a food critic, do they ever just go home and put beans on toast on a plate and enjoy it.

one thing ive learned over the year is that art is subjective, i don't offer criticism unless asked because again, while i may thinkg something is AMAZING others may not. As a photographer, I'm just happy people are out shooting. Back in Film days no ever criticized. That being said, i say keep shooting everyone, ignore the critics and keep doing that you guys love!

Thanks - I think it's very "decent" for a kit lens :-)

I think a major issue is that photography is devalued by people not considering it to be as much of an art form as something like drawing or painting, since anyone can 'press a button'. At family events I've given my M5/6D to family member to take a shot of my gf and I and they are never the same quality as what I take of them purely because there's more to it. A lot of non photographers struggle to even understand how to use a single AF point.

People have also became too gear focused and push their requirements onto others. I personally don't need 4K video or weather sealing (my 6D is weather sealed and I don't even let a drop of rain on it :p ). The M5 is the almost perfect camera for me and if it had a FF sensor, I could happily replace it with my 6D.

I could go into a lot more depth about it but don't want to go too far off topic :-P

Decent? Define decent. Are you one of those pixel peeing types ?!?!?!
Well I cannot define decent for anyone but me and my back sure feels decent after
carrying the M5 all day. I can't say that about my 1DXii, know what I mean?

I wouldn't quite stretch to being classed as a pixel peeper! I meant haven't seen many (perhaps any) images posted where people have said "wow I love this camera" using the EF-M lenses apart from the 22/2. I have found the EF-M lenses to be fine, but not great.

I didn't say I had a problem and I wasn't moaning about EF-M lenses. I was just saying that all of the posts I have seen where people are saying "wow I love this camera" they are not using EF-M lenses. It was an observation, not so much criticism of EFM lenses which seems to be how people are reading it.

So finally got my replacement and been having fun with it. All fingers and thumbs at the moment and been using it with the adaptor mostly. But also with my only M lens the 11-22 which seems in to be at least on par with the old 10-22 EFS I had (sold it to buy the 11-22) lost a bit of light but gained IS. Is it a replacement to the 7D2? No but its a different tool and it pairs nicely with it. Its actually got me shooting a wider variety of subjects than throwing on a 400 mm and that staying put for the duration of a walk due to being to lazy to change lenses or carry the bulk of my 70D and the larger lenses. Couple of pics no great guns but been mostly playing about trying to get used to button placement and seeing what I can get away with.

Max the horse @ iso 6400 croped a bit with the 400 F5.6.

Landscapy frozen pond with the 11-22. Am not much of a landscape person but one of the reasons buying the camera was to try and improve.

Both converted in LR and a few sliders moved about but nothing much really done. A bit of noise reduction on the horse (slider at 25)
