Not what I'd prefer to be imaging, but Poof and I are doing our own van to rv conversion and
the M5 is pressed into service. Here's one step done of the process. I'm trying to get lots of photos
in case I have to find something hidden behind panelling later-

M5 with remote speedlite.

Anyone successfully used their M5 to control a remote flash?

I've tried with a Canon 430EX, but the camera doesn't recognize the flash. Have seen reports that the 430EX II as well as other Canon xxxEX II and above speedlites can be controlled by the M5. Can anyone here verify?

Thanks in advance for any help or tests.

As in using the built in flash to trigger a remote flash? If so I have no idea but I have used my M5 with the Yongnuo RF-603 triggers with no issues.

Yes, using the M5 flash as the controller.

Thanks - good to know, as the Yongnuo triggers are affordable.

Thanks much for the reply.

Honestly for the price of 1 Canon 580EX you can get a full setup with Yongnuo.

If you do go the Yongnuo route, get a YN685 flash and a 622C trigger. The 685's have a 622 and RF603 built into them and I've had no compatibility issues with the M5.

I just received my 430EX III-RT yesterday, will give it a try Saturday and see what happens.

@Dlee13: thanks for the Yongnuo info. Will check out the YN685 and 622C. Good to know they will work.

@LoneRider: look forward to results of your testing. Thanks!

So no go with the M5's built in flash acting as a commander.

My new 430EX III-RT ($239 refurb from Canon) works perfectly though on the M5 and is totally compatible with my Yongnuo 600EX-RT II's.

The 430 as master on the camera and the 600's as slave in wireless (tested both optical and rf). This is good because even though the 600's work on camera, they don't seem to work with the M5 when the Yongnuo ST-E3-RT is on camera. Haven't figured out the reason as camera recognizes the ST, allows to change settings through camera menu, flash indicator is lit on the lcd, but the flashes don't fire.

The 600 is really too big physically for the M5 and the new 430 (which is smaller than the old mark II) is a better fit. Multiple flash with the M5 is important to me since I am hoping to use it for real estate work and it is a much smaller and easier to carry kit over the 5D IV.

Final note - if optical is good enough, the 90ex will work as a commander for the 430 III and the Yongnuo 600's as well.

LoneRider: Thanks so much for testing the m5 with your flash gear and posting the results. Very, very helpful.

Shame the M5 won't act as commander even with the Canon 430 ex III, but good to know the Yongnuo 600's can work as either optical or rf slaves.

You didn't mention - did you test the M5 as optical commander to the Yongnuo's?

In any case, as you also pointed out, one could use the Canon 90 ex or 270 ex II as small flash/commander on the M5. Alternatively, Dlee13's rf setup of Yongnuo 622c with Yongnuo YN 685 flashes seems attractive.

Decisions, decisions ... :)

So I see you're in the US, so I used B&H as an example.

1 Canon 600ex II is $479

In comparisson you can get 4 Yongnuo 685 with a YN 622TX controller for only $462.

IMAGE: https://c1.staticflickr.com/4/3892/32409666204_d1a76cd0f3_b.jpg

I've used mine with no compatibility issues as I mentioned and the Yongnuo flashes are great quality. I actually have a 430ex II but after getting the Yongnuo's I don't think I could ever comfortably buy a Canon flash again.

Yes, the Yongnuo worked optically as well as rf being controlled as slaves by the 430 optical/rf.

The refurb 430 is twice the price of the YN600EX-RT II ($115), but none of the Yongnuo stuff I have tried works ETTL with my little Canon (G5x) so for the price of a 270EX II and a YN600EX-RT II I was able to get one flash that double duties and gives more options for use on the G5 than my 90EX or a new Canon 270 or 320 would.

I agree completely! I had YN triggers (early ones that didn't support ETTL) and have been happy with all of the YN products I have had.

What sold me on the YN600's is their being mix and match compatible with the Canon RT flashes. $500-$600 a piece for Canon is ridiculous, especially if you need 3 or more units. $115 for the YN let me buy three of them for less than the cost of one Canon 600.

$239 for the 430EX III, while still steep is much more reasonable given the options having one of them gives me and the ability to use the YN600's with it.

A few more from my holiday ... just to show off NZ. These were taken from a dingy with a two stroke engine powering us over the water, with ten tourists and the driver. We were going 20 knots, and it was quite exhilarating! It was an absolutely brilliant day weatherwise too. The area is the east coast of the Coromandel peninsula, a very lovely and popular tourist destination.
With the adapter and Tokina 11 - 16 f/2.8. What a great lens, although I may not have dealt with the distortion very well ....

Rock formations - these have names but I can't remember them!

Cathedral Cove, so name for it's symmetrical walls. I was stuck right in the middle of the boat, with people on both ides, in front, and behind me so was limited in what I could get without people's heads in the way. We were there at high tide, so people were wading through, at low tide you can walk. The water is crystal clear, and the sand almost white.

There's a small marine reserve right near, and the regeneration of fish life has been amazing. If you're caught taking fish from the Reserve it's a $5000 fine PER FISH.

A pohutukawa tree cling to the cliff, a common sight on this coast. Apparently the roots go into the ground as far as the trees lean out. It's know as the NZ Christmas tree because it has red flowers at Christmas time.

More from Cathedral Cove trip.
We spent a little over an hour on the water, first going south, then heading back north to what we've already seen. This is heading slightly south from the Cove. Cliffs formed by a volcanic explosion with the lava cooling when it meets the sea. The driver did tell us what the different rocks were, but I can't remember unfortunately. We went into several caves, but my shots of those have lots of other peoples heads in them, so haven't posted them

And a view of Hahei Beach as we arrived back. They just back the boat in to the beach and you step out into the water, which at this time of year is quite warm. Even I was tempted to get togs and go for a swim.

More from my holiday - this time Waiheke Island, just a ferry ride away from Auckland CBD. Lots of people commute via ferry.
I really enjoyed a bit of a walk, and some wine tasting in this particular area.

Someone said about this image that the spiders had been busy. For those who don't know, the birds can decimate the crop, so one method is to cover the vines with netting;
