In this old thread I have a bunch of embedded images which aren't showing. The code in the post is just (with square brackets)

{img}https://www.mrwild.co.nz …nk-ok/potn/rec1.jpg{/img} (external link)

Here's the actual URL, which is messed up on the link above:

The image loads fine when you copy and paste it into a browser. It loads fine when I try to hotlink it from another website. Hotlink protection is turned off for that directory.

Can anyone work out why the images aren't displaying?

This (external link) seems to work fine for me.

The same link in the thread you referenced works if I copy it into FFox, even though it does not work in the thread. This is beyond me, & I think we need Pekka's input. I'll see if I can get his attention.

Yeah it a bit weird. It's rare for a technical problem to beat me... I wonder if the forum is doing something fancy/special.

No hurry, thanks Pekka :)

That site is served by CloudFlare, but by putting it in that "hotlink-ok" folder I've indicated to CF that the images should be able to be hotlinked. If we can't figure it out I'll just attach the images to the post.

That site is served by CloudFlare, but by putting it in that "hotlink-ok" folder I've indicated to CF that the images should be able to be hotlinked. If we can't figure it out I'll just attach the images to the post.

The reason is that there the url https://www.mrwild.co.nz/hotlink-ok/potn/rec1.jpg (external link) returns

Content-Type: text/html
HTTP/1.1 302 Moved Temporarily
Location: https://www.mrwild.co.nz/stop-stealing-images.png (external link)

So the hotlink protection has indeed kicked in.

Why the image shows in a "physical browser" like FF or Chrome must be based on how the server's hotlink protection is configured. Nginx servers are notoriously difficult to set up.

To debug:
If you enter the url https://www.mrwild.co.nz/hotlink-ok/potn/rec1.jpg (external link) to http://web-sniffer.net/ (external link) you can see the same server response that POTN image checker sees, too. Location field URL is where the image is retrieved to be validated as a real and safe image file. Now that URL returns a simple html hotlink info page. Also, content type as "text/html" will invalidate the image, too.

When the image shows in above web-sniffer.net page, it will show here, too.

^ ^ Went there. Tried it & it's all Chinese to me. I suspect that there will be a LOT more attachments in your future.

If you want a simpler answer, there it was in one line: "the hotlink protection has indeed kicked in". :)

Why? The reported problem is with that specific server and files on that specific folder only. It is a not a problem affecting all embedded photos.

Thanks Pekka, it is the hotlink protection. I managed to hotlink it from another domain so I thought I'd taken care of that, but it was another domain under my control and on CloudFlare. I'll have another look - seems a bit tricky with CloudFlare. I may just turn off CloudFlare for that domain, or attach the images.

Thanks for the info.
If image error messages are "fixed" in the post (they are if the errors were found when posting or editing), and you want AMASS to re-validate all the images in a post: edit the post and submit the edit (no changes needed). That starts a background process for image re-validation. Reload the page after few seconds to see the result.

I tried that on the original thread & see no difference.

There will be no difference until the remote server is reconfigured.
