Looking for a second body in the coming months before the Holidays and I've always wanted a 1DX however the 5D Mark IV is very tempting. I Shoot pretty much everything but either camera I think will come in handy during indoor or Night time sporting events. I can deal with 7fps however my main concern is AF. Is the 5D Mark IV better in terms of AF? If it is then I might consider it because the Price range are almost identical for a clean 1DX with low shutter count.

1DX Benefits:

Better Low Light, 12FPS, Bigger Battery

5D Mark IV Benefits:

30mp, Better Dynamic Range, Faster AF???

I'd probably cross the "Better Low Light" off the benefit list. It's about even when looking at both at the same output size. And at that same output size the grain-diameter of the 5DIV is smaller which is easier to control/reduce.
Also, the same output size 5DIV image (which is reduced to 18mp) is a tad sharper too than the original size 1DX, at least on DPreview's studio scene where I'm looking at both right now. And since the 5DIV is a bit sharper reduced to 1DX size, it means that the 5DIV noise can be further reduced by a tiny amount when equalizing sharpness between the two (or the 1DX will gain a little bit of noise when applying a bit of sharpness to match the reduced-to-18mp 5DIV image.).

The other points are probably valid but I've never used a 1DX so I can speak of those much (except the dynamic range which is clearly better at low ISOs on the 5DIV).

Faster AF? I would chose the 1Dx, also more consistent in my opinion. But as Gabe says the high ISO images from the 5D are not bad at all and can be equalized down to look "nearly" as good as the 1Dx. I find at ISO2000+ I miss a little DR in the highlights over the 1Dx, but at the same time you gain a load of DR at low ISO.

5D will give you a full spread of AF points with a lens plus TC (f8 max aperture), which is a bonus IMO.

5D shoots quiet or really quiet (but no e-shutter :( )

I will still use my 1Dx for low light stuff.

Personally, if you aren't primarily sports.. and may have occasion to want more DR, I'd go 5DIV

performance wise for the sensor, it is pretty much a wash at higher ISO, but what an advantage the 5DIV has at low iso!

I would buy the 1Dx over a 5D4 but probably a coin toss..advantages both ways

Build and AF is gonna go to the 1Dx1

The 1Dx1 is going to be usable at 12800 ISO and has a much better AF system

From what I am seeing on the net and as a 1Dx2 owner 25000 iso is usable on these new sensors

After reading Bryans reports at Digital picture, I would venture to say 5D4 is good to 12800 as well....25000 was a push at best and 51000 was garbage...per Bryan....he is a guy I would trust 100%

"better low light"

I believe the 5D4 will focus better in low light.

If your main concern is AF, then you can't go wrong with either body.

To be honest, as long as the cameras are functioning properly, if you're not getting shots in focus, it's not the body.

Man I have to say I wrestled with this very decision. the 1Dx1 can be had for $4500.00 new and Im betting refirbs with be right near 4K from canon.

I am KOC..King of cheap

That 1Dx1 is a heck of a deal right now. How often have i been above 12800 since i got the 1Dx2...probably 30-40 times and I put it there most of there time to see what I would look like

I would not take my 5D3 past 6400 unless I had no other choice. 12800 on a 1Dx1 is cleaner than 6400 on the 5D3. I probably could have got by with the 1Dx1

But I opted to step up because of the new sensor technology and I wanted a body that I could keep for many years

Tickled i have the 1Dx2. Now that I am back on a 1D AF System i can state w/o hesitation that its superior to the 5D system everyplace you can test it against

So I dont ever want to be back in the situation I was in when I sold the MKIV for the 5D3. I use the AF systems to my advantage

Knowing what I know now and using the 1Dx2 AF system.......I would opt for the 1Dx1..who kidding who....AF and ability to customise is huge...So is ISO

but looking through what I have shot since I got the 1Dx2.......I would definitely choose the 1Dx1 over the 5D4.........12800 is very usable om the 1Dx1

My budget just increase a bit so now my problem now is pricing, I was debating getting the 1DX new because I've had terrible luck with focusing issues in the past however by Holiday time in December I am expecting the 1DX Mark II to be $5,000. If that is the case then why bother with the Original 1DX at $4200-$4600 when I can get the Mark II for a little bit more.

Why would you expect their brand new flagship pro body to be $5k new? Good luck with that.
Maybe grey market or used but I don't see this body being reduced for Black Friday or Christmas at least for another year or two.

agreed

that $5999.00 price will stay put. The original 1Dx1 went out at $6499.99 and then dropped. $5999.00 id $500.00 under the D5

price will stay form until next update

Its a bloody steal considering what bodies have been on the past

So is the 1Dx1 at its price point

tough call

You crazy to think it won't drop. Grey Market already at $5500 and I've seen lightly used copies for $5200. I am not sure about the street pricing over at Canonpricewatch but I expect it to be atleast $5500 by Christmas. Of course it's all speculation but looking at the past few holiday seasons, Cameras drop in price quite a bit.

Agreed. 5D mark IV body street prices are $3199 already, and this is just a month after release. 1DX2 will definitely go down.
