Canon DPP vs the Nikon alternative?

Dear Board,

After about ten years with Canon cameras I decided to check out the alternative and I picked up a Nikon D300.

I have no complaints about the camera. I like how it handles and I like the results I get from it.

I did not receive any software with the camera and I downloaded Nikon NX-1 so I could have a camera compatible program to work with.

I know a lot of people complain about DPP, but I find DPP and how it works sort of intuitive.

If anyone out there can give me some tips for NX-1 I'd surely appreciate them.

'Capture NX-D' is the latest Nikon software as far as I know and should be compatible with your D300:

You say you have NX-1 - did you mean NX-I? The old copies of capture NX (I don't think it was ever called NX-1) and Capture NX-2 are no longer available and I believe you had to pay for them(?).

If you have View NX-I that is a current piece of Nikon software and is primarily for viewing and sorting files and also does some quick adjustments. Capture NX-D is for more advanced processing.

When I bought my D300 used I emailed Nikon USA and asked if they had any downloadable software to use for processing. I got a response back with a link and I downloaded what was provided.

The link you sent seems to be an updated version of what I downloaded previously and so I installed what your link provided. The previous program was Nikon NX-i, and I kept it because I cannot throw anything away!

I'll find my way eventually.

I use ViewNX2 and Capture NX-D for my Nikon gear. I find Capture NX-D is pretty similar to DPP4 for Canon.
I don't remember if these are free or not. Nikon was charging for some of its software. What's up with that? Canon's DPP4 has always been free although you are required to input you serial number.

I am not fond of any of these although I play with them occasionally. I prefer LR6 and CS6.

Yes, Capture NX and NX-2 had to be purchased (and it wasn't that cheap IIRC)
The new Capture NX-D and View NX-I packages are free, but no longer include the NIK software 'control points' that were popular in the old versions.

Like you I don't particularly like them, the UI is rubbish IMO, I prefer to use LR/PS or CaptureOne Pro.
