Yup, used a fluorescent ring light housing, (actually pretty rugged, survived 2 drops on asphalt so far.) Still got the lights with ballasts. I don't think I'll ever use them, will probably go on craigslist at some point.

I've gotta say, thats a clever idea with the disposable flash tubes. Very cool!

Do you know if they are prone to failure? I mean, the cameras are only good for a couple dozen photos, so will the flash tubes last for hundreds or thousands of activations?

What data I could find on those tubes suggests about an 8 joule discharge every 15 seconds for a thousand pops. In my case, it's less than 1 joule, at a max burst rate of say 3 in a 4 second period.

So I'd say I'm not stressing them too much. But spares are easy enough to find.
