I'm new to the world of using a flash. I'm going to be taking photos in the jungles of centeral America with the following setup - Canon 7d MII and Canon 100-400 II.

I'm looking for advise on a flash setup. I'm thinking an offbrand flash.

Heya,

Take a look at a Yongnuo 685 or Godox equivalent, with a MagMod grip & MagBeamer. Really sweet setup that isn't flimsy.

Very best,

I was thinking the Yongnuo 685 with the wireless flash control kit. Anyone have recommendations for an off camera mount?

I was thinking the Yongnuo 685 with the wireless flash control kit. Anyone have recommendations for an off camera mount?

I use a standard flash bracket, big L bracket, no-name stuff but made of metal. I gets the flash off axis from the camera to help with steel-eye. I use a generic ETTL flash cable, I don't use wireless for this even with the capability. I attach my bracket with a reverse arca dove tail plate which grips my lens foot (arca dove tail) from underneath so I can take it on/off fast. I use the better beamer attached to my flash, but I recently got the MagMod system and it's less flimsy, very rugged, and a lot fast and nicer to use which is convenient. I used to use a YN565EXII but I now have the YN685, and it's a great flash (HSS & ETTL).

Here's how I did it for very cheap:

Here's how it attaches by sandwiching to a lens foot with the bidirectional arca plate:

Quick attachment, off-axis, with better beamer on there. I've since changed up to MagMod MagBeamer system for this. It's much more rugged and easy to use. The BetterBeamer was good for being being inexpensive, but they're so flimsy and I got tired of having to fix it and re-situate it all the time.
