I currently use a stand alone copy of LR 5 but I have bought a 5D mk4 and need to upgrage to LR 6 to open my raw files.
If I buy a stand alone copy of LR 6, can I just do a straight install and it will just take over from LR 5 or is there anything I need to back up and copy over to LR 6 ? hopefully the upgrade is fairly straight forward..
many thanks..

I'd imagine that it would prompt you to upgrade when you try installing the full version. But why wouldn't you just buy the upgrade version anyhow? I just did.

That's pretty much the procedure. Its always good to have a backup though.

It can be a bit of a challenge to actually buy the stand alone LR6 - adobe tend to obfuscate its existence as they want people to go the CC route. However, once you find and buy the upgrade the process should be straight forward.

LR6 will detect your LR5 catalog and offer to create an updated LR6 version with all your old edits. The LR5 version will remain as will your copy of LR5. You can remove these once you are sure everything is working OK.

Ain't that the truth. I still did not find LR6 upgrade. Can anyone provide a link?

Thanks

How did the upgrade go Gart?

I upgraded from 4 to 6 on my primary (win 10) computer. I tried to upgrade my secondary computer, but Lightroom said it won't work on Windows Vista. :-(. Time to upgrade my OS I guess.

Yes, the time was 2009 when Win7 came out. At this point any PC old enough to still be running Vista should just be retired.

It's a quad core pre-i7 CPU with 8GB of RAM and an upgraded video card (Nvidia GTX 750Ti) with SSDs. It still runs quick so I've never needed to upgrade. My main problem is that LR4 doesn't recognize my 70D images. I think I'll just use DPP on that box.

Win7 is just so much more efficient than Vista. Vista goes out of support in the spring so no more security patches from Microsoft. A lot of software already has dropped Vista support. If you don't want to go with Win10, you can probably get a copy of Win7 cheap. That'll get you to 2020 before it too loses support.

If you're running a Vista machine then I DO NOT recommend W10 as it most likely have conflicts w/ some of your hardware. Better to upgrade to W7 as others have suggested and plan on phasing out that system by the end of W7 support.
