First time this has ever come up so I was hoping to get insight from some of you.

A client agreed to purchase a license to use one of my photos. We made an agreement over price, I sent the invoice. Today they have sent me a W-8BEN form to fill out, but this has never come up before so I'd like some clarification about it.

I live and work in Canada, and I'm presuming the buyer is set up in the U.S.

Thanks !

Sounds like this allows them to claim that US taxes aren't expected to be paid against this money because the money was paid to a non-US National. Seems accurate.

of course, I am not a lawyer, i'm just a casual internet observer.

I get these all the time when I am working for/licensing to US companys. They need to tell the govt why they arent getting taxes on it. As they say " It's a standard form" ;)
