Paid a visit to Dawson Creek Park in Hillsboro, Oregon after eBird indicated a profusion of wood ducks, up to 350 of them! It was a really rainy afternoon and it rained throughout the 1.5 hours I spent walking around. But the wood ducks were there, not quite 350, but I counted at least 125 of them. Here are a few of them! Hope you like them!

All taken with the 7D2 & 100-400 II.

If I don't get the shots I want with the gear I have, the only optics I need to examine is the mirror on the bathroom wall. The root cause will be there.

Thank you, Terry! Not sure what they were arguing about! Maybe the male didn't want to cede the high perch to the femaie! :)

Apparently, I was there too early, at about 330pm. I was told that a whole bunch show up a bit later to roost. I might go there again this evening around 5pm. According to ebird, there were over 350 wood ducks roosting there in the evening a couple of days ago, and a couple of mandarins as well. Probably escapees, so I won't count them in my life list, but I have never seen a mandarin, so I hope they are there.

Excellent set Scott, it must be quite a sight all of those Wooders all together like that. Top notch work here.

Well, I went back to see if I could spot the mandarin duck.

This was the scene when I arrived at about 5:20pm. This is about a third of the wood ducks in the water, so that gives you an idea of how many there were even before the final flocks flew in.

Sure enough at about 5:40pm, about 20 minutes before sunset, a whole buch more flew in and about tripled the number there. So, I would estimate that there were more than 300 wood ducks there at sunset.

And yes, the mandariin was there as well! It was really dark and I didn't have a flash, so I cranked up the ISO, tried to brace myself and made the best of it. Here are a couple of shots:

Nice shots! That's crazy the amount you have there. We have a couple, maybe, in the Tahoe area, but we got lots of mallards

Awesome and wow in the same sentence! I consider myself lucky to see one or two in a year, and can't imagine seeing that many together.
