Hi- I have 7d and am wondering what would be a better choice.

Would 5D Mk iii do the job or should I spend the extra money and get the MK IV? I don't want to spend extra money unless the extra 1400-1500 $ is worth the features.

I have the upgrade bug and am tired of 7d (not that i have mastered it, just tired of using it).

I will be using it for taking pictures of kids/family/vacation/functions. My kids are 6 & 8, and do the usual stuff that kids like to do.
In no way ever am I going to work professionally.

My current gear

Canon 70-200 f2.8 II
Sigma 50 mm f1.4
Canon 24-70 f2.8 I

Thank you for your input !!

I can't imagine that any one would think that the 5D3 or 7D could be "better" than the 5D4.

Perhaps the question has more depth to it, but I missed it?

That said, if you have not mastered your 7D yet, maybe no upgrade is best. IMHO that's a different question. Certainly it would seem than any of the bodies mentioned would do the job you are asking of it.

You are right - sorry I did not state my question correctly. I fixed that - what I meant to ask is if I am going from to something - should I spend 1800 $ and get a barely used 5d Mk iii or spend 3500$ and get the mk iv.

The well worn mantra surrounding upgrades is to determine what your present camera is not doing for you and then find the camera will fulfill those needs. I guess everyone is different but if just being tired of using your camera is an adequate reason to upgrade just buy what you think will check your happy/interest box.

for kids/family/vacation stuff you'd probably be fine with a 6D...so id go 5DIII...

what are you really looking to gain in an upgrade? i mean you're not going to need crazy AF for what you shoot...you'll get shallow DOF, and better low-light by going to a FF camera...but you could gain some of that just by purchasing lenses too

What is it about the 7D that you're tired of?

Thank you guys.....

My thought process is this -

7D is kind of old, I have lenses that are better suited for full frame lens, 5D will give me better images especially in low light, and time is right to sell the 7D and get some money especially since there is an opportunity to purchase a almost brand new 5D MK iii for 1800 $ ( so sell the 7d and apply the funds to new purchase bringing down the price of admission).

With above in mind, I though let me get some guidance from this forum and benefit from professionals/semi-professional people's wisdom and ask if I am spending 1800 $ - should I stop and be satisfied with 5d MK iii or spend 1800 extra and get mk iv.

With 7 D I am not getting good low light performance - and some of it (most of it) is technique but its not every day a professional model is being discontinued and there is an opportunity to purchase a pro level camera at a good discount.

This makes it much easier to answer :)

5D3 would be a great upgrade, it will get you FF, better auto focus, and better image quality and low light noise. It truly will be a good upgrade coming from 7D.

You may also want to consider the 6D, what you gain with 6D is even better noise handling than 5D3, (though hardly noticeable) and better extreme low light focusing with the center AF point. (6D center AF point will focus in lower light than the 5D3)

What you will lose with the 6D is the control layout you are used to on the 7D, and the 5D3 AF system as a whole is a significant upgrade to the 6D or 7D af system.

Coming from a 7D the 5D3 is a very big, and great bang for your buck upgrade right now. You can get them used for less than $1,800.00 if you shop around! :) You also get features like dual card slots, etc. and the frame rate is faster than 6D.

I think your gut level thinking on a good solid used 5D3 is a sound one.

I agree with Jake. Hard to go wrong with a used 5DIII.

But, IMO, $1800 is too much to spend on a used one. Black Friday deals are right around the corner if you can wait it out.

If money isn't too tight, then splurge on the 5DIV.

A 5D4 would certainly be the preferred option - it is simply the best of the options suggested. But how much better? From my (brief) playing with the 5D4 not enough. It is a fine camera but for the uses that the OP suggests I feel that a 5D3 would be just fine and a LOT cheaper!

If the OP can get anywhere near the cost of a 5D4 then selling the 24-70 F2.8 V1 and getting the 5D3 + a 24-70 F2.8 V2 would be a VERY nice combination! Sorry, I just love this lens.

Given the price of the 5D4 (in the UK) you might squeeze in a 16-35 F4 L IS too. The 5D4 is great - just too expensive at the moment.

On a grand scale, I would say the IV is 'worth the extra money'; but from your description of your usage, etc, the 5DIII should be a solid and useful upgrade for you. Keep in mind that a 7DI doesn't fetch more than about $300 in the secondary market anymore, so might not put much 'oomph' toward the purchase.

For what is described the 5d3 is perfect. I shoot a 7d and 5d3 in exactly the conditions described, and the 5d3 was great, no need to spend twice the price of the 5d3...

Well
You can also consider the 80D with efs 10-18 (or other crop lens)
For what you describe as your typical usage it is more than enough
But it will not satisfy your FF purchase bug
(i am growing one as well)
