I don't have a 5D IV, but I have both the 5D III and the original 7D, so I can speak to the difference.

The 5DIII is a superb camera. It certainly beats the 7D in low-light performance, it's controls and customizability are great, and the AF system is also excellent. It's what I use 100% of the time when I am doing candids of kids and events. And you're right: the lenses you have will pair very nicely with a FF.

What you lose, relative to the 7D, is mostly reach. Because of the difference in reach, you are going to be carrying heavier and more expensive gear for any given framing. You also lose pixel density, but for most people, that doesn't matter. I do macro, so for me it does. I keep my 7D for macro and for the rare cases where I want more reach than I can get with a FF, a 70-200, and a 1.4x extender.

From what I have read, the IV is a step up in several respects, but not enough that I personally am tempted to spend the money to trade. For others, the decision may be different.

I agree with Jake. Hard to go wrong with a used 5DIII.

But, IMO, $1800 is too much to spend on a used one. Black Friday deals are right around the corner if you can wait it out.

If money isn't too tight, then splurge on the 5DIV.

THanks for the input guys. The camera I am looking at has 250 shutter count, looks spanking new without a single scratch/sign of use and has a receipt with B&H with serial number listed purchased 4-5 months ago. I called canon and was told it was not registered with them. For a camera like that - does that seem a lot ?

I would really appreciate any input !

Your sentiment was expressed by another member so I tried to look up past 5d MK iii camera for sale but could not find anything similar for less than 1600 $ and even then the shutter count was >10K :(

Sounds like a very good camera.
Mine sold a few weeks ago, immaculate physical condition, about 7K clicks, for $1,500.00

Currently, I believe the camera is at a price stop before the end of this month before significant savings may be had for the holiday season. If timing works for you, I'd definitely wait until after Black Friday. If history is any indication, there will be deals on new 5DIII's with the release of the 5DIV which will impact the sales price of used bodies.

Thank you - I know its always difficult to anticipate - how low would the new 5d MK iii bodies go for?

Impossible to know for sure, but you can definitely count on sales/deals at the end of this month (at or around Black Friday) as this has always been the case. Subscribe or keep an eye at CPW (Canon Price Watch) as they post deals frequently.
