Very Frustrating!

Am using a 7D Mark II with a Tamron 24-70.

Using Manual mode f/4 and 1/80 exposure time with 160 ISO. The colors and lighting look to be fine but why am I not getting a very sharp crispy clear image??

No editing done to the photo except file size reduction.

Your comments are appreciated.

Looks good on here. Nice image composition.

Even at 1/80th its easy to blur if you are handheld.

Test using a tripod and if you are using a filter on the lens, remove it and test again.

I like the shot.

Agreed 1/80 could be too slow but the image is too small and there is not sufficient information to be able to make a true assessment of the problem.

My first impression is that the focus is slightly towards the front, probably on the front edge of the metawork but we need a link to the full size image and information about exposure mode, focus mode and whether you have made AFM adjustment to the lens before we go any further.

Would also be good to know what focal length you were shooting at. Doesn't look like that came through in the info. You may be able to handhold 1/80th at 24mm but not at 70mm, for instance.

Can't tell from the sample and information provided as others have said though.

I agree with above, If it was me personally I would push the ISO up to 500 or 640 and that would allow you to take the shot at a much faster speed. I must say thought your image taken at 1/80s is very good indeed.

And I am so sorry that I am too late to be the first one to point out the slow shutter speed.

In your opinion would I have been able to get a better image using a Canon 70-300mm "L" lens? (vs. the Tamron)

You're close enough with the 70mm, so no point really in changing lenses if you stay in the same focus length.

/there are better and worse glass per se [L glass is considered sharper/, but this would be a big of an offtopic for a question at hand/

With your list of lenses, why even bother with the Tamron?

We can't really give an accurate answer to that, because all we have to examine is a little 'compressed-and-shrunk-for-the-web' jPeg.

We can't really tell much of anything about the image from the little photo you posted.

As others have suggested, you may get some accurate, pertinent feedback if you post a link to the full sized image at the highest quality setting, or - better yet - to the RAW file, so that we can view it at 100% and actually see what the image is like.

"Fare" and "fair" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one. The proper expression is "moot point", NOT "mute point".

You also have to consider the fact that birds can move very quickly even when they are seemingly at rest. Father movements, etc. The head looks soft but the feet are quite sharp. As others have suggested I think upping your shutter speed could do the trick.

In addition to what's been said, did you shoot RAW or jpg? If jpg, what were the settings?
As for, "No editing done to the photo except file size reduction.", all images need some type of sharpening, & sometimes more than once before you get to the print or display image.

Not as easy a ? as you thought, is it? ; )

I do not have a RAW copy of the image in question. The original file size of the image is 2.24MB. I didn't think the forum would allow me to post a file size that large so I just used LR to reduce the size in order to post it. I did no other editing.

Maybe you could have posted a 100% crop?

You'll have to excuse my ignorance but is this what you are referring to?
