My late '13 MacBook Air is suffering editing large panos from my Rx1rii and I'm looking to edit more video. I'm in the market for a new laptop without much of a budget as long as I'm future proofing myself for at least 4 years.

Right now I've got my eyes set on the new Razer Blade QHD+ 1TB SSD i76700 Quad Core 16gb ram and Nvidia (forgot which but better than 960)
Touch display, thunderbolt 3 and lots of great ports...all for $2700 all in.

Now the stealth comes in at a $700 discount. Offers a 4k 100% Adobe RGB screen but is reduced from Quad Core to dual core, but 7th vs 6th gen i7... No graphics card...but still 1TB, 16gb DDR3(vs DDR4)...

I'm not doing major video projects, just vlogging stuff as I drive from Argentina to Alaska in my VW Bus. I shoot video with Sony Rx100iv and GoPro and sometimes my rx1rii.

I've looked at the Zenbook aswell, the 501 model with comparable specs to the better Razer with 4k...but the online reviews say the yellows are gross and the screen way too glossy.

So, what so you think?

I was seriously considering a Razer Blade, but I was a little frightened off by reviews of their customer service. I think the Blade may be a bit overkill for photos, as LR won't really make use of the powerful graphics card. I believe it helps with rendering, but not much else (I could be totally wrong about that). I was actually considering the Blade to use with Davinci Resolve, which requires a lot of VRAM, but I ultimately decided that using a laptop with Resolve just wasn't going to be a great idea.

The Zenbook looks great for the money on paper, but from benchmarks it seems to throttle the CPU more than others with the 6700HQ.

I kind of went the conservative route and bought a used 2015 Macbook Pro.

As of right now, I wouldn't consider any 9xx series laptops right now for that price. The 10xx series just started rolling out and they are the full desktop versions while the 9xx series are the mobile variants. You mention future proofing and the difference between those generations, even a GTX 1060, is huge.

I currently have a co-worker who is trying to sell his Asus i7 6xxx (unsure which one) + GTX 960m laptop that he grabbed for $1200 and get the Sager NP8153-S that has the GTX 1070 with a 4K screen upgrade for ~$1700. Those two systems are night and day when it comes to performance, at least game wise. I think many would say that in regards to photo editing you won't notice much difference between any of these machines really considering they are all quad core i7 with 16GB RAM but with video editing, you'd probably be better off going to a video editing forum.

Here is an MSI one (external link) that comes in $700 less than the Razer with similar/better specs. Not sure if your married to the thought of Razer though.

Just some extra thoughts to toss into your brain.

I went with the Razer Blade in a 512gb version with the 1060 for 2299. 300 more. The value being a touch screen I guess but that MSI looks like a fantastic machine. I like the extra 1TB HDD. Too late now :)

Why not keep the laptop and add a desktop? I just bought an octacore with 32gb ram and it slays panos. Laptops are great but for me overheating during intense processing was always the biggest bottle neck.
