I have a friend who has gotten her CPL stuck (not cross threaded) on her 24-105 lens. It's a thin mount so not a lot to grab on to. She bought a filter wrench and no luck. She is going to travel to a camera shop about 80 miles away and they are going to break the glass so they can get it off. Is there a better solution for her?

Rubber strap wrench or a rubberized lid remover are the best way to get a grip on it. If that doesn't work, you'll have to get more aggressive.

You can try using a saw to weaken the filter, then use needle nose pliers to pull the weakened filter off the lens. You'll want to break the glass to do it.

How long had the filter been on the lens? That may be relevant...

A thought would be to try some spray-on lubricant around the edges.

I've seen comments from others who have had this happen, maybe someone will chime in!

Before you go the destructive route, try this: Dry ice might be best, but you could put an ice cube in a bag & place it on the glass for a few minutes. The cooling might make the filter contract enough to loosen it up.

After you get it off, take a pencil & rub the graphite on the lens threads. Screw the filter on & off a few times to work the graphite into the threads.

I would try the rubber band method, as already mentioned by Qlayer2. Try to distribute the force of your grip around the filter, otherwise (if pinching the sides) the filter will jam.

Update.......... camera shop got the filter off and in the process ruined the filter but that was to be expected. Threads were crossed but no damaged to the lens as they put another filter on. Lesson learned as this was her first filter and shouldn't happen again. Pencil will be used to help lube the threads (great idea).
Thanks for the help and ideas from this great community,

Whisle

Another great idea is to not use a filter.

Good that it got resolved, though.

Yeah, except it evidently was a polarizer. I myself don't tend to pack/use filters, but there are times when polarizers can come in handy!
