Canon 70D Video Tips?

This weekend, I will be taping a marching band from a press box - far away - and I'd like to use my 70D for video. I have not used video much on the 70D.

For those of you who have, how difficult is it to zoom and pan at the same time? Any other tips? I nearly tried it under similar circumstances a week ago, but it seemed like it would be awkward.

What lenses will you be using? We really need more details to fully help you. Do you have a really good tripod with a really good fluid head? You will need both of those by the sound of it to get a good smooth pan with a big lens, but without knowing far more any advice will be difficult.

I do have a very good video tripod - very smooth in both pan and tilt. Lens is EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS STM.
