Got an external microphone because before when I used the on board mic I had to crank it up to 75% to even pick up the voice. Unfortunately this picked up everything else as well, including the breath of the person talking.

To remedy this I picked up a Rode lapel mic, now the voice of the person talking sounds great(cant hear them breathing anymore) and I turned down the level to just 50% but for some reason I am getting loads of static? like a static sound which sounds like when you turn up the gain to 100%, but this is just at 50%? makes no sense.

Recording product videos for youtube at work, using a EOS M to film with the Mic plugged directly to the camera. Turned off Wind filter and Attenuator(whatever that is).

Could really use help, thanks!

That's a condenser microphone, which means it requires power from the amp...and the correct voltage. Although Rode says the microphone will work with 5v "plug in power" from DSLRs, I suspect it's a lot happier with the 12v or 48v "phantom power" from a pre-amp or recorder, and the difference is that at some point you have to turn the gain up. If you're not doing it in the camera pre-amp, you're doing it later. That's the reason you're getting the increased noise...the signal is too weak. The only thing you can do at the camera is turn up the camera gain.

I was afraid of that, thank you so much!

My cousin works at a music shop, so hopefully I can get a deal on a recorder.

yeah I had it on manual, which I assume turns it off.

Saramonic makes some XLR pre-amps and mixers that might be cheaper and more convenient than a digital audio recorder. I use Tascam DR60D and DR70D recorders that screw in to the bottom of the camera or camera cage via 1/4-20 tripod screw. The sound from the digital recorder's XLR inputs is much cleaner than the camera's built-in audio. I feed the output of the recorder into the camera and use the camera's audio track to sync.
