Only my second time attempting portraits like this and I'm a totally baby at photoshop. I have soooo much to try to learn.

Oh, I like this last one the most. They're all very nice. The lighting is beautiful. However, they seem slightly yellow or just a tad oversaturated maybe? Personal taste. Also, the strap at the bottom of the halter sticking out kind of bugs me, but that's not something you're really in control of... I think trying to clone it out would just look weird.

Well done :)

Thank you! Yes, it might be a tad saturated but he's a gorgeous chestnut that really looks like that. :) The halter thingy bugs me too but being highly (emphasized HIGHLY) inexperienced with photoshop means I'm not that skilled or confident in fixing such problems yet. Here's another one in which the halter was being pulled by the lead causing the brass ring to hide under his chin. Removing the strap in that one was easy and doable for me. ;)

Very nice.

Try a longer focal length - 135mm or more.

Not that I know anything about taking equine portraits, but I like them.
The first one is my favorite.

Thank you ksbal! Your earlier advice was wonderful! :D

I used both my 50mm and 85mm for these on the D7100 (crop sensor). That caused me to be a decent distance from him I think. He's natually quite stocky and thick (not to mention a total pill to try to photograph! lol ) so I don't think I had any distortion issues. Is that why you suggest the longer focal length? To minimize distortion and/or get more compression?

I'd love to snag a 70-200 at some point or maybe just a 135mm. Christmas is coming soon so......we'll see. ;)

yes and yes. :) I hope a 70-200 f2.8 is in your future. 7DII is also a crop sensor, and I always try to be above 100mm for portraits.

If I owned the horse, #1 deserved a canvas space on the wall. Marvelous creation!
