Has anyone else watched the news tonight or anytime today and been completely annoyed but the shutter noise? I mean seriously, do 20 photographers all need 1000 photos of the same exact thing... you could barely hear them talking.

Rant Over!

So, I wasn't the only one I see. I was actually thinking what camera(s) is/are those?

Ha, it would almost be off-putting and surreal to see a bunch of photographers at an event like this and not hear shutter noise. We've been used to it for so long.

Funny, I was in my car listening to the news and heard the shutter noise - I was trying to figure out how many cameras were there and how many shots each could actually be taking at that point!

It's always been there, it would be weird without it, kinda like when the crickets stop cricketing:-P

I agree that it has always been there, but it seemed like there was much more of it. How many shots do you need?

Here in Atlanta on the drive home, they were also talking about it. Lots of people were wondering what that noise was, so they said over the radio,
" Apparently the camera has a mirror that slaps around in there and that camera companies should do something about that" I just about fell out the car laughing..

I watched and agreed. So dumb.

This day in age when 4K frame grab is available and they are only posting images for news sources I don't see why they all don't just video and pull that data.

so distracting.

They probably need hundreds of frames so that they can scour through them looking for those awkward expressions and gesticulations that are then used to pasquinade politicians and public figures.

You need a number of them to choose from, as you never know when one of them is going to blink and twitch or do something similar and the photo is therefore unusable. You can't use a photo when you clicked right when one of them blinked and it looks like one of them has their eyes closed. Also, there a only a handful of photographers in the room, which means they are pool photographers, and therefore not only taking photos for their employers, but also on behalf of the entire white house press corp. Those people want a number of different options so that everyone isn't running the exact same photos later on.

It sounded like about 40 photographers shooting not stop at 10-14 fps, it was just relentless. I know we're used to hearing it, but this was extraordinary, a real talking point on the news over here too and totally distracted from a huge event. As has been said, do you really need 1-2 thousand shots of the same thing? Why not just have one guy distributing to all ( the official white house guy is a superb photographer ) , or insist on mirrorless cameras these days?

Do we (well, they) need still more regulation just because some are annoyed?

As others said, they would have been looking for that "key" body language shot which told the story. Those moments happen far too quick to be able to time a shot so it's best to "spray and pray".

That kind of media photography isn't about art, it's about getting a result fit for a front-page.

I was at a politician's press conference and asked the TV news crew if the flash and shutter sound would bother them. They responded "Just the opposite - it shows that a lot of press was here".
