"In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields."

Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae.

Always an emotional moment when I read that, CDS, or recite it in my head.

Another remembrance if I may add to this thread: "The Band Played Waltzing Matilda" (external link) on YouTube.

Thanks, Jake. You and Robin Meade, both made my day today. Your post, and her "Tribute to Veterans", both made me smile/cry. I am sitting at home, 7-days post-op from wrecking my motorcycle, and feeling a bit blue. Both of you reminded me that I am one of the lucky ones. I got to go home at the end of my service. 13 June 1974 - 15 May 1983, US Army.

Two military-themed songs make me cry every time I hear them: Taps, and Suicide is Painless. Our national anthem comes really close. Add a military fly-over at a ball-game and I lose it.

"I am here to remind the American people that all who put on our nation's uniform make a commitment and in fact, sign a blank check payable to our country for an amount up to and including their very lives." Jimmie Foster, National Commander, American Legion 9/22/2010, to a joint session of the Veterans' Affairs Committee.

Thanks, vets. We owe you... everything.

Always so moving, had my two minutes silence at 11am, not much to give, is it?

Thanks Jake.
