Canon 70-200 f/2.L IS II vs Tamron 70-200 f/2.8 VC

Since your committed to buying new have you considered value when selling it later or do you plan on keeping forever? Both are great performing lenses... currently used value on the II is around 1500s while the Tamron is 800-900 range.

IF you were to buy the tamron new your looking at more of a loss down the road vs the II.

In the end the II will be more solid on AF. The Tammy is great but the II is simply more consistent this I know. As a hobbyist the Tammy fell into the perfectly acceptable range so it was OK for me while if I was a pro and/or demanded perfection then the II is the way to go.

But we are seriously talking something like 96% accurate for the Tammy and 99% for the II. This is the margin in AF performance from my personal use on multiple II's and Tamrons.

Don't hold your breath. Rumors are always spread (on purpose) when competitors are announcing a new lens. This is part of the marketing war.

Nikon came up with the new lens to catch up with the current Canon lens, and the Canon lens is so good that I don't see any reason for a minor improvement at +50% price boost. Pro photographers won't update unless there is a strong reason for it, so what would that reason be ?

Not holding my breath but I am seeing couple of massive promotions on MK II, so I am sure there's something to it. The Nikon now betters the Canon, except for the bokeh, which seems to be smoother on Canon. I am sure when they will come up with one soon, overprice it and sell lots of it.

Its all business and nothing else. I don't mind this notion, MK II is a killer lens and a flooded used market with riches like this is good for hobbyists.

Canon is legendary in it's marketing techniques and gives each of it's new release lenses opportunities to blossom and be profitable and once those sales die down a tad then release the next product.

16-35 2.8 III is on the high train right now... before that was the 24-70 2.8 II... They released V2's of their big whites already... without a doubt I see a 70-200 2.8 III coming soon... it'll have the new 3 mode IS, BR optics, be slightly sharper... slightly lighter... but only by a few ounces AND it'll be priced in the 2600-2800 range.

I see the 85L 1.4 IS coming to light... this will be amazing and it'll piss me off for buying the ART because the canon will be just as sharp, smaller/lighter and have IS. They released the 35II already and now are slowly taking care of the other primes. It just takes time...

...because they give each lens release some 6 months minimum to blossom. It's their culture/marketing.

Im freaking mad i missed it but Canon had Canon Refurbished (As in direct from Canon with a Canon-backed 1 year warranty) 70-200 f/2.8L IS II for $1429. Which would have been having my cake and eating it too...

Regardless, I ordered it, as stated above, its about resale value too. Every Canon lens ive owned ive sold a while down the line if i needed to and lost very little to nothing from it.. Now that might not be so true (some of my glass is old.. My 15-85 is 7 years old, the 100L is 6, my Sigma 50 is around 6 as well.. i know the Sigma 50 has NOT held its value well (I think it goes for around $150) my Canon setup is mostly complete with the exception of 2-3 more lenses... (Specifically.. id love to upgrade my Sigma 50, as much as i love it id love something with slightly more consistent AF like the Canon 50mm f/1.2L or the ART) I'd love to get a wider prime (Sigma 20 or 24mm perhaps) and a ultrawide of some kind that isnt the 11-16 (good lens but i never felt 11 was realy "Wide" enough for an ultrawide and i didnt like the poor MFD, i love exaggerated perspective with an ultrawide, its one of my big uses for it) The biggest thing i need now is a good case capable of handling the 7DII, 15-85, 70-200 f/2.8L IS and the 150-600 perhaps with a spot for the primes... I honestly see me of course taking the lenses i know ill need with me versus ALL my gear in any one setting..but i DO see needing both the 70-200 and 150-600 in the same trip

Also need a new speedlite.. probubly just get the 430.. the 580 was always overkill for me before it broke...

Really has be considering ditching my GX8.. i really love it, i love how light it is and the IQ is even very good but i cant help but feel its not setup right for me anymore.. if i went on a trip my 7DII is coming with due to my lens selection and the FAR better battery life. 4k Video quality is awesome but the 7DII isnt a slouch (and i dont do much video) if i dont ditch it i might just switch the lenses out... Im not sure at this point however.

I need to sell my 11-16 and my old 7D+Battery grip still...also my Sigma macrolite because it doesnt work on my 7DII

I have decided to hold onto mine, the price on those in the used market is so low that I feel its not worth it at all. Its still a useful crop body as a backup and maybe someday it will be worth more as an antique.

Late to the discussion, but when I got the canon 70-200 f2.8 IS II last year I was very impressed. A year later and it is still my most used lens. Oh and on a 7d2 as my main camera also.

And nice puppy. We are waiting for a german shepherd pup right now. Born almost 3 weeks ago so it is killing us waiting until it can come home. Going to be in January sometime.

Thank you, She does seem to adore the camera quite a lot... however tries to chew on the lens hoods a bit

She tried to bite the lens itself. Once.

She also hilariously grabbed it by the peak design strap and tried to run with it.

Canon makes tough stuff. And im thankful for that.

Im more trying to figure the settings on the AF that work the best. I've found best success with the 9-point surround and 15 point Zone AF it can be really difficult with how quick she is, even for a little puppy, to keep the points on the target.. the 70-200 definitely outperforms my other lenses however

And i also am not expecting 100% keepers here. Im realistic..
