3d Printed Lens Hood

I picked up a 135mm for a good price recently and it didn't included a lens hood. I figured it was a long shot but I checked out thingiverse.com for a 3d printable model of the hood I needed. Bingo! A local library has a 3d printer so I sent them the model and they are printing it up this week.

Ive heard that 3d printed stuff needs to be finished with sanding and stuff so I'll add to this thread as I get the hood. If anyone has suggestions let me know thank!

If you find that to brittle or it breaks on you, have it printed at 100% infill, it then becomes solid. Something like this as long as the attachment point is solid and fits well, the rest of the part would only need finishing if it really bugs you.

I guess I don't understand why you don't just buy one from Canon or an aftermarket.

This seems like a lot more trouble than it's worth.

Looks about right for a 3d part. Not everyone understands the thrill of making something yourself. I have made my own L brackets when I could buy one for less than $20, my own holders for hiking with my gear. Heck I even converted my own carry on bag with dividers and all for traveling. Some people just like to make Does not hurt for me that I work in a machine shop and we have a 3d printer.

Why are there two hoods?

They had two 3d models on the site so I had them print both.

As this is ABS, you could try an "acetone bath" trick (google it) to have all those visible layers disappear. With the right amount of acetone, the whole piece will become solid and shiny. Then just apply high grade (1000 or more) sanding paper inside the barrel to remove the internal reflections.

I have my own 3D printer now (cheap Anet A8 from China; works pretty well), probably should start collecting ideas on how to use it for photography...

What is the wall thickness of that 3D printed 'hood'?....it looks like it would serve well as the barrel of a rocket propelled grenade launcher!

the wall thickness is only 2 layers thick with 10% infill. Granted the walls overall thickness is probably 3-4 times thicker then it needs to be.
