So although the distance between the tips of the red arrows looks to be the thickness of a finger, the plastic is very thin?

Yea, like my printer lays down .2mm layers, a 2 layer wall is only .4mm thick, then its a honey comb grid inside that takes up 10% of the inside space until you get to the next wall which is .4mm thick. Those are all things you can change from print to print.

Cool project. How does it mount to the lens?

Looks about right for a 3d part. Not everyone understands the thrill of making something yourself. I have made my own L brackets when I could buy one for less than $20, my own holders for hiking with my gear. Heck I even converted my own carry on bag with dividers and all for traveling. Some people just like to make :) Does not hurt for me that I work in a machine shop and we have a 3d printer.

With photography...I make my own photos. ;-)a

Can we get a pic of it mounted? It is fun to 3D print items, but waiting is the pits.

You're forgetting the thrill of diy!

Yeah... I just thought it would be a fun project.

To me, finding a model online and printing it seems about the same as just buying it complete. Why not make the model yourself? Something like a lens hood would be pretty easy to model up.

Constructive criticism is always appreciated.

Well its not like it comes out of the printer clean and ready to pop on so I could argue it isnt the same. I cant say the 3d designing part is what gets me excited but if thats your bag more power to you.

Always odd when normally creative minds become sticklers for the norm.

It's different, I like it.

3d printing parts to enhance another hobby is a great idea. and that lens cover didnt look too bad at all in the end. If you'd done a lower layer height of say 0.1 or o.05 you would have got a much better finish and probably wouldn't need to sand an paint it, but you did a good job!

I've recently bought a 3d printer myself and designed some macro diffusers, which are far better than my previous DIY versions made of bits of plastic leftovers and paper!

Nice! ^

I just designed and printed another photography related item (specifically astrophotography) - an adapter for attaching Logitech C260 webcam to Canon EF lenses (it replaces the existing C260 front panel):

I will be using this with Canon 70-200 f4L as an autoguiding camera for my 6" reflector telescope.
