A6500/6300 or A77ii?

I currently am a Canon user, but often have thought about switching over to the Sony's because I really like the EVF. I'm curious what influenced you to pick the model you use. As you can tell, I don't know too much about their line-up. I do know that the 6500 or 6300 are much different from the A77ii in body style, but that is about it. Are the mounts different?

My shooting favorites are sports (mostly surfing), wildlife, and occasional flowers and macro. Portraits....not too often. Because of the sports and wildlife I'd like to hook it up to a long zoom. Currently I'm using a 7D, which has been nice but lacks the EVF.

Yes, they're different mounts. A77ii is A Mount, while the A6500/6300 are E Mount. There's a lot of debate in the Sony camp as to whether the A Mount is "dead" or not. Sony has not done much lens development for that mount for many years now, and has been focusing mostly on E Mount. That said, Sony did just release the A Mount A99ii, so that does indicate to many that A Mount is not totally "dead".

Traditionally, most sports and wildlife shooters have had better luck with the bigger A Mount bodies, in terms of AF performance... while portrait and landscape shooters tend to favor the E Mount. But recently I've been hearing a lot of glowing reviews of the A6300 AF performance for sports - and the A6500 could be even better. If part of your goal is to hold on to lenses you're currently using on the Canon, and adapt them over to use on the Sony, that would only be possible on the E Mount A6500/6300. Not possible with the A Mount A77ii, would definitely have to replace your glass

The A77ii would be great if you want to replicate your experience shooting the 7D, but with the addition of EVF, greater dynamic range, more MP and in-body stabilization. There are zoom and macro lenses that will suit your needs very well, especially if you are willing to try Tamron glass. Sony and Minolta glass is good as well.

I enjoy shooting sports--and shooting in general--with the a77ii, especially at the price I got it and my two a-mount pieces of glass for.

While I have not shot its successors, the a6000 typically gives me better images than my a77ii does SOOC. For sports and wildlife, though, you are going to pay somewhat of a premium for proper e-mount zoom glass. If you are willing to do so, though, IMO you will be happier with your conversion. Just a few things:

--there is no e-mount glass that goes past 300mm.

--once you put an adapter on the a6x00 body it becomes somewhat awkward to shoot with.

--you will have to buy the new a6500 if you want IBIS.

If you are prepared to spend more money, and don't mind being limited to 300mm, go for the a6500. The weight savings and performance will knock your socks off. If you want to spend considerably less money and don't mind a bigger body, grab a deal on an a77ii--they're out there.

My theory is that the a6500 was in the pipe-line but the release schedule was accelerated to fire-back at the EOS-M5, Fuji XT-2, etc etc.

Sony seems hell-bent on positioning themselves at the head of the innovation curve, and this tends to mean shorter product life cycles. It does seem that, for the time being at least, that the a6500 is not a replacement for the a6300, but a higher end model that will be sold alongside the a6300. It makes sense IMO.....the a6500 is being sold at a premium and not everyone needs the performance of the a6500.

The interesting thing is that prices in the used and new markets seem to hold steady despite newer models being released. I've been waiting for the a6300 prices to drop but they are not moving at all!

$600. Used prices are hovering at around $800, which is not much of a reduction at all!

You may consider the A6000 at this point
