Just finished up a trial using C!P and was very impressed with the software. Was wondering how many others have made the switch and what comments for and against. Am just starting a demo period on DXO11 to compare. But so far think C!P does a better job. I shoot primarily wildlife (mostly birds, butterflies, and dragonflies) and details in C!P where pretty darn good.

That reminds me of RawShooter, the raw converter that lasted until the 30D, when Adobe bought it out. It was regarded as the sharpest and most detailing converter of the time, reputedly due to its great demosaicing algorithm.

But many users complained about muddy skin rendition, me too. Only after switching to another converter did I find out what was causing the muddy skin tones in RawShooter. It was a sharpening preset that you couldn't zero out with the sharpening slider (that option was hidden in preferences) which only sharpened with black halo that was difficult to notice, but muddied the midtones, especially skin.

I had to analyze an image at 400% to finally diagnose the issue.

Never looked back. C1P runs circles round Laughroom.

Both are capable of good results. There is always a learning curve when you switch software but Capture One Pro is very well thought out in terms of workflow.

C1 has always produced superior results to Lightroom and the latest version is a lot quicker than Lightroom. I switched to LR several years ago as the convinence of having RAW adjustments and DAM in one application was appealing enough to accept a slight degridation in image qulity. The DAM functionality in C1 still sucks but the combination of lower image quality, sluggish performance and the constant reminder when using LR 6 that Adobe really want you renting the software maed me switch back to C1 which I have no regrets about. I also have DXO Optics 11 which produces results on par with LR but with better lens corrections. C1 is definately the RAW converter to beat at present and I will be perminantly ditching LR and DXO Optics.

You know, I hear about Raw processors that are superior to Lightroom/ACR in terms of image quality output -- one of these days I'd hope that we could come up with a "Raw Conversion Comparison" thread, where each poster posted a "best result" from Lightroom, then a comparison result from one of the other converters, and then linked to the Raw file so that others had a chance to produce their own results!

I myself don't use other processors than LR, occasionally DPP, at any rate I'm not in a position to start a thread with meaningful comparisons, so I hope someone with such experience sees this and chimes in!

Digital asset management.
It's about storing, cataloguing, moving and retrieving your photos.

Unless something has changed lately, it can't be bypassed in LR.

What is DAM?

DAM is the "acronym" for Digital Asset Management. It was coined back in earlier days for the book "The DAM Book", presenting the need for tools to manage/organize our growing quantities of digital photos. After the book came out and got some real attention among "serious" digital photographers, Lightroom came out to seek to address that need, offering an integrated "package" that included the top-of-the-line ACR Raw processing engine combined in one integrated workflow/interface with useful organizational features as well as output features. So, Lightroom was introduced to bring DAM fully into the photographers' workflow.

OK, thanks for explaining DAM. I have used LR for 8 or 9 years, but am not good with acronyms.

Thanks for all the replies. Just about to finish my Dxo 11 demo period. Things I like about Dxo but still feel C1P is the way to go. Been using LR since version 3 but feel it's time for a change. In particular when I downloaded demo for cc and it screwed up my current version. Had to delete cc and reinstall my version of LR. Good thing I backup often. Hoping c1p will be having a Christmas discount coming up. Either way am switching

Randy;
Could you post an example how Capture One Pro pulls more details out of RAW file.
I have all four of them (ACR+Photoshop 6, DxO 11, LR 5.7-standalone and Capture One Pro 9) and I had a feeling that Capture One just
sharpens the image more by default. If I played with sharpening in other programs I could get the same results regarding RAW details.

I just came across Capture One Pro recently. Looks interesting. I'm currently a LR user, but Capture One looks pretty cool.
