Don - did you ever send the camera and lens to Canon?

How prevalent is this AF issue? I've heard it from a couple of people here, but is it something that should cause me to wait and have the issues worked out, like the oil on sensor issue with the D600? Or is it something that is just a one-off event and not worth worrying about as a prospective buyer?

If I don't get the shots I want with the gear I have, the only optics I need to examine is the mirror on the bathroom wall. The root cause will be there.

A lot of people have bought them and had no issues...There have been a few people with AF issues on the forum but the majority seem ok.

There have been very few issues reported. A few users here and a few others I've seen on other forums. All signs point to the fact that there aren't any issues to work out except maybe the odd quality control issue. Unfortunately I think Don has been extremely unlucky.

Jez, thats rotten luck Don to get two bodies with issues. Would it be worth exchanging for a third body? The chances of getting 3 lemons must be slim.

I own both, my 1dx mk2 has what now I would call major focus issues. The focus is quite soft on the majority of images.

The 5D Mk4 has so far functioned without a problem, and I hope it stays that way. It's actually outperforming the dx2.

I had all the 5D's and recently sold my 5D3. Never had any AF issues with them. I have the 7D2 and owned all the cams from that line back to the 20D. I had to send my 7D2 to Canon a few times to get it to where I want it. First time I even had to do that. My intent is to become a one body owner which would be a FF. Having trouble as I really like my 7D2 and I seem to be into birding more these days and I like the reach. I have seen very nice crops with the 5D4 so I'm on the fence. I'm not getting max benefit out of my 24-70 II. I'll wait until after xmas to see if the price goes down. Maybe I'll go back to owning 2 cams. Just tired of lugging more gear around when we travel and do a lot of walking. Mind you I picked up the 55-250 STM for my 7D2 and light travel. That is a gem of a lens.

Even if they are seemingly the same (like 5D Mark III vs. 1DX), the AF systems in the 1D-series typically have higher performance. This is to be able to handle the higher frame rate.
But if the camera is capable of focusing in a shorter gap between images, it does of course also imply that it's ready a hair before the slower one when taking single pictures as well. Even if you normally don't notice the difference.
Sometimes there are also other subtle differences, like iTR being available in the 1DX but not in the 5D Mark III. The extension of the AF system to also include the spot metering point location is also typical of 1D-series cameras.

Note that I'm mainly referring to the 5D Mark III and the 1DX, not the newest models. But that's simply because I've no personal experience with the newest models.

Inconsistant AF.....Perfectly sharp images using liveview but poor percentage of sharp shots focusing through the view finder.
The issue seems to be worse at distances over about 10 meters when using my 500f4. I have MFAd the lens and it makes no difference.I have even sat shooting deer and trying different MFA settings and none will get me a sharp enough image, yet take a shot using live view and it is spot on..
I know the lens is fine as it was perfect on my 6D a few days before.I love the touch screen and AF features and 7fps but I am getting worse images than when I had my 6D.. It is better on closer subjects but not as it should be..Shutter speed is not the issue as I can handhold it using liveview and the same settings and the images are tack sharp..

I know this is an old thread but I'm glad to hear I'm not going nuts with my 5d4.
I'm currently having exactly the same problems with my 100-400 and 300 2.8.

After gaining experience with the 1DX Mark II (but not the 5D Mark IV), I have at least learned that the 1DX Mark II has a 360000 pixel metering/subject tracking sensor, where the 5D Mark IV has one with 150000 pixels. So the 1DX Mark II should be better at focus tracking faces etc.

Im Kind of glad this post came back up

from my previous post

I am seriously considering selling off my 5D4. After further use on both cameras, The 1Dx2 outperforms the 5D4 everyplace. I have over 110K shots on the 1Dx2 and when I absolutely have to have the shot, the 1Dx2 gets picked up. Additionally, the 5D4 behaves much differently in AV use and with flash use in ETTL when compared to the 5D3 or the 1Dx1 & 1Dx2 bodies. Exposures are all over the place. I sent mine back to canon for a look and so have a couple other wedding photographers that I Know from DWF days....all with same complaint. erratic exposures in AV mode with ETTL flash use.

So Iam ready to make a change. With everything thats going on with the EOS R line up, Im just waiting on a dual card release body.....I will never let this 1Dx2 go. Its the best camera I have ever used. Definitely not 100% happy with the 5D4.
