Funny you mention that...I had posted one of the the original shots from the game straight out of the camera on a sports photojournalist FB page...and got 'critiqued' for too much dead space to the right to the play. lol It all happened so fast as you might imagine so I was just thrilled to have captured the main event ...in focus. Was shooting with a 400 so framing the pic during the play was not an option. And having got the whole sequence, the square format worked.

Work at it and you'll be doing it as the play develops so you have the camera oriented the way you want and the action framed well as it happens. Practice, anticipation and a bit of luck all play a part with practice, skill and anticipation playing much more into it than luck.
Years back on NFL sideline shooting with a friend who took NFL photog of the year we were talking about his shot that took top honors in a Hall of Fame photo contest. In it you see the players going for the ball. Great composition, perfect action and exposure dead on - and 5 or more photographers in the background on the other sideline standing and watching it. Not one was watching through the lens. If so they would have had some excellent images.
Too many I worked with and see don't follow the game through the lens. As a result they lose focus on what they are doing much of the time. Not all, but most I have watched as they photograph sports.
