Tomorrow (11/23) the new ON1 RAW converter will be released. It appears many in these forums have purchased it and will be testing it.

If you have a review, have compared it to Adobe, Capture One, etc. post it here. Also any hints, tips, bugs and workarounds.

Well, it's the 23rd and it's coming up on 9:00 in the east and... nothing.

I guess we're waiting for those lazy west coasters to drag their lazy butts out of bed.

Edit: for something they have been developing for years, and something they have been hyping the heck out of for the last year, you would think they could get at least one staffer to stay late or come in early to push a button on a keyboard to send out the mass mailing and allow downloads.

It was talked about in another threat that ON1 Software must be small. It appears so... and quite lazy, too.

I see two. Hopefully the forum servers won't crash because of them...

did you activate it? received an email from a support manager stating they were having activation problems, and the software could only be used in trial mode.

Edit: I did log into my account. It was not available. The email included download links but I can't publish them here because I don't know their terms on that.

I downloaded it and activated it this morning.

So far:

- it downloaded and activated fine.

- it crashes with RAW files from my Fuji X-E1, but works okay with files from my 7D, 6D, 5DIII, and wife's Fuji X-A1.

- It seems a little quicker than Lightroom, but not quite the "lightning" speed they claim on their site.

- As this is the pre-release, some functionality isn't there yet. Things like cropping, histogram, and a few other things. Hopefully they'll release these items soon.

Thanks. I have not kept up with their blog, but apparently they have mentioned quite a list of features that will eventually be implemented. That's fine with me. If they're being square about it and stated ahead of time it is incomplete, then that's honest.

Crashing on RAWs. Sorry, know nothing about that camera but I would certainly let ON1 know about it.

Unfortunately, I don't have time to test it right now. My biggest priority would be if it is able to get 3 extra stops of DR like the ACR 2012 engine is purported to do.

I was going to shoot them a message about the crashing, but according to their "contact us" section of the web site, they aren't taking any questions right now during the pre-release of On1RAW. Seems weird; you'd think they'd want feedback on crashes like that.

Well, not surprising to me. I can only imagine the email any company receives when a new app is released. I am not looking at the stuff right now, but they have a picture of the tech support staff and there's probably only 6 or 7. If their staff is that small, they would undoubtedly get totally clobbered with support tickets.

A good plan would be to categorize tickets. I would image they could get dozens about the same issue. It's a waste of time to address each individually. After categorizing, they could answer all with the same reply in a few secs.

I see this release more like an open beta where they are gathering more information while they finish the code. I've had it crash once and lock up once. Other than that it is much quicker than LR in the fact that you don't import any photos...more like bridge, just go to the folder.

Yea, probably not fair to do a comparison with any other RAW converter right now. Even important components like Histogram, Navigation, and Loupe are not available yet.

Yet I will say I did only one image - one of a set of HDR multiple exposures and it did do a decent job of pulling the darks up and the brights down.

As far as crashing is concerned, if not apprehensive of a privacy issue, I would probably say it is best to say yes to the anonymous reporting and supply the info to log into the ON1 account. Not quite sure what info they get, but if crashes and such are being reported, then assisting them would lead to a faster resolution.

Edit: not familiar with the speed of LR, but when comparing it to CC bridge --> ACR 2012, I am not seeing the ON1 product as being any faster.

I thought there was three. I'm sure I've seen another one lurking somewhere.

Tell you what. You spend all day counting and focusing on the number of threads, the rest of us will spend all day playing with and learning the software.
