Hi all,

It has been long time since i posted here, many things happen in my life that keeping me either busy or away from photography, but i will never give up photography regardless what the situations are.

So the new year is nearby, and i am thinking as always to make some changes or updating to my current gear, but i am not really sure if i need to or i keep doing it regardless it is necessary because of GAS disease or whatever, but i always ask before i decide anything, and i decide mostly according to general opinions and advises and suggestions, so i hope it will help me before the new year coming.

In my plan for new year, i am deciding to save about $1200-1500 only for gear changes, and this is in Jan-Feb time, later in next year i can decide for anything else once if i am done doing something within Jan-Feb, so what will be your priority if you are in my shoes of the following:

1. Sell A7r [with another camera to fund more] and go with A7rII, there is no news for another camera of E-mount full frame with big mp yet, and i feel it won't be any soon, but even if it will be very soon in all cases i really would like to go higher mp than A7r in Sony line only.

2. Paying around $1200 for my Canon 24-70 mk1 service if it is available in the service [It has been almost 4 or 5 years there], and keep it for later until i can sell it and buy 24-70 2.8II

3. Selling 1Ds3 and another camera such as 5D classic, add something more so i can get 5Ds or R, still i feel it is not necessary, but it is a plan anyway.

4. Selling Sigma 12-24 mk1, and looking for alternatives with same brand, such as Sigma 12-24 mkII or 12-24 f4 ART, can't afford that Canon 11-24.

5. Selling 1D3 [and maybe 30D], so i can see which fast camera i can get, i really like Sony Axx00 lines such as A6300 or now new one A6500, but those are A-mount, and i don't think i can use any Canon lens with it, so those cameras aren't logic, but i wish if i can have one and then one day i can afford say 70-200 2.8 in A mount.

6. Also my lens 100-400 is one of lenses out of service for long time, but i am trying to get new topics in photography by now so i will include wildlife, and i feel if i upgrade this lens then i may force myself to buy the newer lens, and as long i can sell this lens and get version II it isn't a bad idea, just a plan as well.

7. Selling Metabones mkIII and buy MK4 T, not sure what i get with this upgrade, but if i can do it and possible then why not, i use Sony as my most camera body so wanted to have best accessories if possible, and if i sell A7r and go with A7rII or newer then i want to have newer adapter too just in case.

8. Selling my macro lens, Canon 100 non IS and buy the new one, macro isn't my topic much, but also i want to change my plans in photography itself and start doing macro and some close-ups more, and i also like to have latest gear when possible even the old one is still strong and good enough.

Those above are the main things i really look for to change, not sure which one you will start with, i know there are those members who aren't looking for new gear or update and saying keep the old and don't change, but i hold most gear long enough and i have he chance and a budget somehow to do so, then i don't want to stop updating at all.

As i said, i am thinking to start by Jan-Feb to change something, then whenever i have more budget later i can think for next plan, but now i am still not sure which one is really giving a good update so far, for me number 2, 4, 6 are the least important to upgrade very soon, but they are in my plan since long time if i didn't had that bad dramatic situations last 2-3 years.

Sounds like a really bad case of GAS I'm afraid. Your post doesn't contain a single reason why you would need new kit. What is it you can't do with your current kit that you would be able to do with the new stuff?

Why not spend the money taking your current kit on a nice holiday somewhere interesting where you will be able to take photo that you can't take at home.

This is what i was afraid about, someone telling me what is the reasons of GAS or upgrading, will, as you said, it is a bad case of GAS so i don't have reasons, maybe the main reason is just to keep up to date as much as possible, i don't need to have reasons for any gear i buy, i may keep even my gear that i started in 2005-2006, but life is changing, things are developed and improved, i don't need to keep my old or long timed gear just for no reason to upgrade.

About holiday, i wish i can have a holiday, the budget will not suffice at all for a good holiday because i am with family, so paying around $1200-1500 for gear is much affordable, this price is the cost of a ticket for 1 person, so imagine they are 4 persons, so forget about holiday, if i can't afford for some gear which are less than $2000 then i definitely can't afford for holiday,, and i waited long since last gear, and i am planning to have one gear of the above option until i can save for next summer for holiday.

If i bought A7rII then definitely i won't get 5DsR, but i am still a Canon shooter, and also i have many Canon gear that are mostly outdated, so i was thinking if i sold them all except one body and also A7r then i am able to afford 2 bodies, so i added 5DsR as a second upgrade plan, but i can easily just forget about it and only go with A7rII.

And as a side note, i see some here with A7R and A7rII, why? even i saw some with A7rII and 5Ds or 5D4, so why asking me for getting both? it is more about saving budget to afford gear and it is GAS and want/wish more than NEEEEEED.

Up to date with what? Has the sun been upgraded? Does it now output light that is incompatible with your cameras so they will no longer take photos?

Sure, if you want to start doing macro you would need to buy a Macro lens, or if you wanted to shoot field sports then you might need a long lens or a camera with a faster frame rate. So, as I asked in my previous post what is it you can't do with your current gear that you will be able to do with new gear?

Buying new gear you don't have an actual need for won't make your photos better or make you a better photographer. Spend the money on an advanced photography course, or spend it on a day out for your family or put it in the bank.... that way it won't take as long to save up for that next holiday.

Well a lot of people have more than one body, makes things a lot easier having a backup if something happens or just having a different lens on each body instead of swapping the lens on one body all the time.
Most tend to have similar models, makes it easier. Say having an A7R and A7rII, same batt, menus, controls or similar at least I assume, (dont use sony)

It seemed a bit odd when I thought you wanted to get both as they are different cameras that fill a similar role, i.e high MP bodies. It would be different if you were buying an A7rII and a 1DXII :)

Yes GAS, got to love it. Hit me hard again this year :)

Sure it is a GAS, and it won't go away, but i hoped someone can answer my GAS rather than questioning my reasons or need.
