To set exposure and then WB, particularly wihen working with strobe or flash:

http://www.adorama.com/pvos6.html (external link)

Set white spike for exposure first on histogram
Then set custom camera wb.

never has failed me.

which reminds me, dog ate the 14inch one and I should try to find a black friday deal to replace it!

Video on how to use it (external link)

comes with a great DVD that really you understand exposure and white balance as well as how to use the target card to it's best.

For me, it depends on what I'm shooting, & I always use RAW. For a product shot, I want the neutral WB & would use a Custom WB. But outdoors I might use a pre-set for daylight because I want to keep the warm colors of a late light image.

I am hoping to use it for the most part when I'm shooting portrait with my streaklights. It seams more often then not my shots are on the cold side and need to be warmed up all the time. Thinking custom white balance should help my workflow a bit. Thanks for the comments.

Replace the dog or the target that it ate?

Just kidding of course.

In the other thread you started on this subject we mentioned the ExpoDisc that can be used to set a neutral white balance, but it comes with gels that can be used to tweak the white balance towards a warmer setting for nicer skin tones. They used to make a separate Expodisc specifically for this task that I have.

I tend to find the ExpoDisc is good on location but if shooting in a studio with flash I usually favour a neutral grey card. It's more about ease of use and practicality though in different situations. With the ColorChecker Passport you have the creative target that provides sample patches for warming the skin tones in post production.

Simple White Balance for most folks is quite well handled with a simple grey card. If you need Color CRITICAL accuracy, using the Colorchecker Passport, and profiles for specific lighting circumstances helps to meet the need.

*LOL* just the target.. I was the dummy that left it on the grass, so not their fault.
