Picked this (external link) guy up at Best Buy for $250+Tax. Still playing around with settings, but it is fun looking at a full size image when editing :)

I'd appreciate if anyone could share their experience with this monitor, and/or how to get it calibrated best. I am also thinking about investing in a good color management tool; will this monitor even allow that? The settings are quite limited.

Any way, looks like I might need to upgrade my PC too (or maybe just the video card) since it's struggling to keep up with the graphics. I'm running a 3.10 GHz i5-4440 with 16GB RAM, but using the on board Intel Graphics HDMI out.

It's a TN panel so calibrating it will determine at your viewing angle as well. IPS is usually a desired feature for editing around these photo forums.

If you are having problems with it acting sluggist, it is almost not due to a graphics card update. With those specs you might be having other issues because the 4xxx series CPU and 16GB of RAM is more than sufficient and probably capable than many on the shelf PCs currently.

What is exactly struggling? LR? Windows? Chrome? IE? Maybe we can help.

Windows is fine, but when I'm in CS6, and using an add-on like Perfect Effects, I can see the effects being applied left to right, and top to bottom in 8 or so 'bands' one after another.

That never happened on my 20" 1080p monitor; even if the image was large, it would take a moment (less than what it takes now) to apply the effect, but showed the effect at the same time. Does that make sense?

Yeah, sounds like it. Try to decrease the resolution to 1080p on the Samsung, test it, and see if it happens still. I know a GPU can help with actions/filters in PS.

You were right; set back to 1080p and now I am back to 'instantaneous' effects ... no banding.

Guess I need a GPU, huh? I'm just using the onboard video from the Gigabyte GA-Z87-DS3H MB I have:

Integrated Graphics Processor - IntelĀ® HD Graphics support:
1 x D-Sub port
1 x DVI-D port, supporting a maximum resolution of 1920x1200
* The DVI-D port does not support D-Sub connection by adapter.
1 x HDMI port, supporting a maximum resolution of 4096 x 2160 @ 24 Hz / 2560 x 1600 @ 60 Hz
* Support for HDMI 1.4a version.
Maximum shared memory of 1 GB

Lol .. I need a GPU :) Even a 'simple' 2GB unit should do me just fine ... probably reclaim 1GB of system memory too.

It would be really cool if someone would post up a video of the difference between CPU only vs GPU low end vs a GPU higher end in LR/PS/After Effects.

This is really the only thing that can be found right now.

And speaking of GPU, today is probably like the best day to look at getting one. here is a 1060 3GB for $132:

Yeah, not sure if a 1060 3GB would get any cheaper than that. I mean, you could argue whether it performs against a AMD variant or the 1050/ti in regards to gaming but for your applications, this seems like a steal right now. You should come back to report your experience with 1080p No GPU vs 1080p w/ GPU vs 4K no GPU vs 4K w/ GPU and hit the few applications and your thoughts.

Good luck with your journey!

Oh, forgot to mention i just got this for my mom last night, it's a simple one but for $35 it might just be the only one she needs.
