Decided on an impromptu weekend trip to one of my favorite cities. Decided to continue and work on "street photography" while I was there. This is one of my more favorite images from this weekend. I want to see what y'all think before I invest money on printing. I want to start hanging some of my work (if good enough) around my place and not let my photos just sit in hard drives. Thanks.

Street can be really busy by nature and this is no exception. I don't think it's helping you out here and it's making it more difficult to focus on your main subject.

I'd look to implement some burning/dodging to minimize ancillary distractions and put the focus on your band.

Also might want to check out the highlights on the standup bassist - some areas appear to be approaching blown out.

Cheers!

Jeff

I do print some of mine street pictures, it just looks and feels completely different from HDD projection on the LCD screen.

I think Winogrand defined good street photo as something on the edge of the failure.

I looked at the picture and at very first glance it appeared as miserable failure. Everything is boring and absolutely nothing special.
But I started to look at musicians and here is something how they sit. And then this standing above off all and looking at different direction guy. With light on him.

I think it is worth of printing.

I like it. My cropping suggestion:

I will happily remove my "edit" if you don't like people tampering with your images.

Thank you. I noticed the stand up bassist but decided against burning him with hope he'd draw attention. I might try playing with some burning to see if I can focus more attention.

Thanks. I tried different perspectives and liked the chaos of their almost disarray while performing a seamless cohesive song. I too, at first, thought it was a boring photo but something drew me into it while culling in LR.

No, I do like the crop. I wasn't sure if I wanted to go in that close but it looks good!

Hard to tell what your focus was when you snapped the photo. Too much commotion in the image leading to chaos. Suggest either using a smaller aperture to isolate the musicians or move in closer. A photo needs to tell a story...just cannot find the story within your image.

I don't think this image works. The bystanders all appear completely disinterested and the trombone player seems to be using the bicycle handlebars as a wind instrument.

I understand why Martin wanted to remove the bystanders (see above), but that also cut out the only band member that actually seems to be playing.

Just my opinion, but I don't see much worth saving.

Did you happen to take any shots more "head on" to the group?

I believe another detractor here is that you don't have much of a connection to any of the subjects.

Ronin - You might try a different crop. I'd try to keep the sheet music (on the ground) and the buckets they are sitting on (they are interesting elements and perhaps help capture more of the overall "story" of the shot). I'd probably also try to keep the clarinet player as he adds more action to the shot. For improved framing, you might lose the guy on the right instead. The players could use some space/breathing room on the left since they are looking/facing in that direction. Muting and slightly blurring the background can reduce distractions from behind and help subjects in front to stand out a bit more. I think you've got the right idea here. The image is well taken. A few tweaks will help.

Best,
Mark
