I was hesitant about buying a lens on a crop, but comments like that make me reconsider. I've been through the 10-18 and 10-22 galleries already too. I guess I'll give the ultrawide a shot. Thanks!

I'd suggest the 10-22. It is 2/3 stop faster than the 10-18, has a way more useful focal-length range, and vignettes less. The advantages of the 10-18 are price, and STM, well OK, size.

I upgraded from 60D/10-22 to the 6D/17-40. It was a noticeable improvement. The catch? I moved into full frame whole hog. That was moderately expensive. If you only want to get access to UWA, go 10-22. The IQ difference between the two setups is not worth the cost just for UWA.

Having owned both the 70D and 5DmIII I can flat out say the 5DIII is what I recommend...
I only sold it because I do not use the DSLR much anymore and the crop 70D is fine for when I do need AF/action or (mostly) video, for literally everything else I use my Sony a7 and MF lenses..
Why didn't I just keep the 5DIII to do everything? Because I love the size and IQ from the sony and could not afford both...
But if you need a DSLR then it is really hard to beat the 5DIII for most everything. AF is better than the 70D but the live view dual pixel video on the 70D is one of the reasons I kept it.

Well thank you opening that can of worms. For what I shoot should I be considering a Sony? Maybe keep the 70D and get an A7.

That's exactly the info I was looking for. I'll pick up a lens now and see how it goes. Thank you!

OP,

How critical are you with taking photos of your kids in sporting events? The 6d will work great but you'll just lack the fps for rapid fire applications.

If your shooting events for work I'd simply suggest the 5dmk3. It will have dual memory cards for a piece of mind and it's a universal body with excellent high iso performance, fast fps and wonderful AF. You would be able to tell a big difference in IQ on a computer IPS panel compared to your 70D. However on print the canon crop sensors would be virtually on par in small prints.

As you know technology is always getting better and better. Not sure if you would see great benefits upgrading to an 80D. However for the crops sensor world it's probably one of canon's best crop sensor (they've produced anyways), great dynamic range, very responsive AF system and nice RAW files to work with. Also now that I've purchased an 80D I really fine the video capabilities to be fantastic for family documentation. Nice thing to appreciate is the 1.6 crop factor because once you go FF you'll feel you've lost some reach your accustomed too. However I'd take my fuji files over my 80D anyday as they seem more organic and natural looking and "more meat on the bones" almost like a full frame file.

Not crazy critical. If blurry I'd just take another. And as noted if I go with the 6D I wouldn't have to sell my 70D to pay for it.

If you go FF you may need more reach as you'll lose your crop factor. You may find better quality images in the studio using the 6D.

You can always buy a sony and use a metabones or other adapters for your Canon lenses. I'm just not a fan of using non native lenses.

If weight is not an issue I'd rather buy a Canon 6d instead of A7. If your going to dive into investing into sony....this is where the fun $$$ begins. Start to buy Sony lenses :)

I say 5Dm3 all the way if it's financially in the picture!
