Assuming a single speedlight for outdoor portraits either as fill light or off-camera key light for backlit subjects, which modifier(s) do you use and why?

Very best

Varies by shoot and needs. What time of day? What's the weather like? What sort of "look" do I want? Did my assistant come along, or did I bring my cart and sandbags, or is it just me with the little bit of stuff I can carry?

When shooting outdoors, I'm going to bring one of these options:
- Speedlight in this 42" brolly box. (external link) This works well for main light, or it works well for fill light. Maybe I'll use one or two additional bare speedlights for kicker/rim lights. However, for this I need sandbag(s) and/or assistant to hold it, because a breeze will topple this right over.

- Bare Speedlight, no modifier.

- On-camera Speedlight. Maybe bounced, if there's something to bounce.

- No added light, just ambient. Maybe a reflector but I'm pretty lousy with reflectors.

- Elinchrom D-Lite it 2 with Maxi-Lite dish and Vagabond for power. This is reasonably wind-resistant even with a tall stand.

Pretty much the same here, except Ranger RX Speed instead of D-Lite Vag

BTW, here's a great video of doing outdoor shooting. I like the lighting set ups and the lens usage.

When I used to shoot with speedlites, I was mainly using Qbox 24". My main subjects mainly single person model shots. Now a days either SP systems 37" octa, 22" kacey beauty dish or the medium softbox. And no speedlites as they don't have enough power for me.
