More info | Dec 06, 2016 11:55 | #12 The big help that the watermark provides, at least in the USA, is that if someone does remove the watermark, and then proceeds to use the image within the US, is that it allows for much higher monetary awards, even if the image is not registered with the US copyright office. IIRC the fines start at $2500 per incident and go up to $25000 if I'm not mistaken. In other countries it is not such a definite help, but the removal of the mark is normally useful in proving willful infringement.
