I want to shoot BA flight 289 landing in Phoenix in front of the moon - as it happens Monday Jan 2 will be a supermoon. What makes this flight special is that BA289 is a 747, the only 747 and the only intercontinental flight operating in/out of PHX. I'm using the Photographers Ephemeris app to predict the moon's position, and FlightAware to track the course of the flight. Ironically, the moon is a lot more predictable than the aircraft! According to FightAware, this flight is regularly 30-40 minutes late. On the plus side, during normal weather, the plane settles in to it's final approach about 10 miles due east of same runway every time, 26R on the north side of the airport, so there are definitely vantage points where this shot can be taken. I can probably make a rough estimate of the plane's descent, and try to draw a line from the moon, through the plane's path to the ground, but it feels hopelessly inaccurate. I don't expect to get the shot on the first try. If anyone has any suggestions to help in planning the shot I'd be most grateful. cheers DM

Thank you for the advice. I'm going out this afternoon during daylight to scope things out.

Show up early and track landing patterns of flights before it. The tower should bring the remainder of traffic over the same imaginary line (give or take). Give yourself plenty of room to scoot right and left...to fine-tune the lineup. Go a few nights before and find a suitable spot at either end of the runway, wind direction sometimes changes things 180 degrees. Check FlightAware the day of your event, and you should know for sure...but, I’ve had things change after a setup. Keep in mind that the further the aircraft is from you, the larger the moon will relatively appear. If you want a big moon, and small aircraft...you’ll need to be at least a half mile or more from the aircraft. If you want a small moon, get real close. Shooting on location the night before might help you see this quickly. The moon is about the size of your thumb with an outstretched arm...how far does a 747 need to be, to pull off the shot you need? Or to make it easier, get a handheld radio (http://www.aircraftspruce.com Constructive criticism is always appreciated.
