Hi, I have got problem with Canon 24-105 4L. When I try to zoom I cannot take a shot, I can do it perfectly when back at 24. There is "error 01 communication with lens", "clear the contacts" information on display.
What can I do? Shall I leave it to Canon workshop or is there any kind of fix I can manage myself. Thanks for help.

yours
Jasio

Just curious.... What camera? There is another thread going that references a 'MkIV', without identifying which one.

Hi, sorry for late response. My camera is Canon 6D. Do you think it has anything to do with the body?

I've had this happen. It was an electronic failure in the lens. When you zoom there is a flex ribbon that carries electrical signals. If that ribbon cracks or pulls loose then it could fail when at one position and not when at another.

Can you put this lens on another body? Can you put another lens on this body? Which combination works (or doesn't)?

Mostly using Canon bodies with lots of different lenses and flash.

I had this very error a few years back. Took a q-tip and some rubbing alcohol to the lens electronic contacts. Unorthodox, I know. And many will shudder. But this method of cleaning the contacts cleared the error right up. No issues since.

I had this very error on my 24-105L works ok at the 24mm end but fails at the 105 end.
The ribbon wire inside has a crack in it.
so off for repair I went and it cost me £80 to repair. Now works a treat, this is quite a common fault with this lens I was told.

Nothing to shutter about. That is a perfectly good way to clean the contacts.

You got off lightly. Mine cost close to £200 to replace the ribbon cable at an official Canon repair centre a couple of years ago.
