Who Kept Their Canon 40mm Pancake Lens?

Looking through the Lens Sample Thread for this lens, I see many people posting pictures; yet their current gear list doesn't reflect owning this lens. I am just wondering if that many people got rid of them? If so, why?

Kept yours? Still love it?

I think its a great lens but I rarely use it. I end up taking my 50 or 24-70 if I am shooting with a DSLR. When I go small I usually just go with my G15

Loved mine but since buying the 35 f2 IS I never used it so away it went.

Seems to me it's the lens I always keep in my bag ... just in case. It's so small and so light ... and so, why not? But it's never actually on my camera. Love it, will keep it, but don't expect to use it much.

That is what I am debating - small camera of the 40mm lens. And I am afraid it would be more unused than used. I do appreciate everyone answering me. Thank you so much!

Since you are still debating, I'll toss in my two-cents worth. I never seriously considered the 40STM, because I already own the 35IS and 50STM (had 50II at the time). Two things appealed to me: size, and cost. After some consideration, I passed. I just don't find the size difference a reason to purchase this lens. Perhaps if I were using the 35 II and 50L, I'd me more interested. Additionally, the 40STM vignettes heavily at f/2.8, especially compared to the lenses I already own.

I've had my new 80D for about 2 weeks. I just went through the same mental exercise with the 24 STM, and arrived at the same conclusion. Neither of the STM primes works for me.

OP - You already have a 50, which is almost as light and faster, and you have a zoom for wider stuff with IS. What do you plan on shooting with 40 STM? Is it only because its a cheap bargain and would be nice to have since it takes no space? If you want a wider prime then better look at 24/28 etc as 40 is almost the same as 50 that you already have. Most people don't even carry a 50/35 combo as they are too close in focal length, although some day but have a purpose for them.

Like others have said, if its of no use to you, its of no use to you even if its a lens cap. But if you have something in mind that only this lens will do for you or will do it better (I am failing to find one looking at your setup) then why do you want to get it?

I actually want a prime in this range, look at the 40 and decided its not for me. The weight isn't right to balance the camera (personal preference) and it is too slow for a prime (IMHO primes are way more useful when they F2.0 and faster) as F2.8 can really be covered by many zooms.

Bought the 40 on the cheap. It serves as the body cap when packing my gear. Otherwise it rarely gets used. No motivation to sell it. The diminutive size is the only reason I can give for keeping it around

I am torn between a smaller camera and this lens. I want a nice, light option. And I do have the 50 mm, which adds to the consideration. ߘ

I like the compact size of the 40mm lens. And the price is very attractive. But you are right, if I don't use it.... more to think about.

Thank you all for so many things to think over. I think with the 50mm, I would use it mostly for. Little bit wider, which is really just a step or two back with the 50mm.

Really cheap but good lens.

Really expensive but good lens cap.

I keep it. Not worth selling in my opinion since it's useful. But it's far from being great. I'd use a 35 F2 in literally every situation over the 40 F2.8. But, I do keep it for a useful "wider" lens that is a lens cap basically when I'm using long telephotos (600mm) when I want something wide just in case but don't want the size/weight of anything more than a lenscap (or pancake in this case).
