When I use steam to download stuff(games) I am peaking at 3.8 mbps with my Comcast router\modem. Havent done a speed test anywhere else.

Is there anything I can do to make it faster or do I need to upgrade hardware??

I am protected with a password so no one is stealing my connection and this is even with wi-fi turned off.

Let's assume your Comcast connection is in good order and able to deliver it's rated throughput. You are then limited by your slowest device in the download chain. This could be the wireless connection between your computer and the wireless access point or could be your disk to which you are downloaing the file.

On my system when downloading to my traditional HDD (mechanical) I too get the speeds you are reporting. By comparison, I recently added an SSD drive to my computer and when I download to it I get significantly faster download speeds. Now I only download to the SSD.

Also it could well be the server at the other end of the line that is the slowest point in the chain, especially if it is a very popular one, with a high user load. This is very likely with things like game servers, serving popular games with lots of concurent users.

I'd look over the link at http://corporate.comcast.com …ng-your-home-wi-fi-signal (external link) and then redo the speed test mentioned at the end.

I have the 850 evo SSD so its probably not that.

I am wondering if its the comcast hardware??

Is it worth upgrading to something better??

I guess ill do a speed test when I get home. I doubt its only steam...

Just spoke to Comcast yesterday. They told me straight up that after a certain amount of time their modems / routers don't work as well. She told me that it's free to go pick up a new modem / router, and they come out with a new one about every 8 months. I've had mine for 2 years, so I'm going to pick up a new one Thursday. I have 200mbps, and regularly peaked at 180. Lately it's been more like 125. Also make sure you're always wired for the fastest speeds.

The thing I can't stand about Comcast is their upload speeds. While most carriers have similar DL and UL speeds, Comcast is around 200 down 15 up for me. Their 250 down gets about 30 up, but for some reason their 200 down is no faster than their 100 down. Thought about switching to ATT because they offer 1GB down/up in my area for only $90 per month.

Equipment can stop delivering the speed its supposed to for a variety of reasons, but I wouldn't straight up say "oh it won't work as well after a couple of years." Unless the equipment itself is of bad design (does happen), answers like that are often how tech support gets off a tricky troubleshooting call.

Anyway, PJmak, if you're paying Comcast for a 25Mbps connection, are you peaking at 3.8Mbps or 3.8MBps?

ISPs sell in megabits (Mb) and online speed tests will report speeds in megabits. However, browsers and many programs (Steam included) will usually report speeds in megabytes (MB) and there are 8 megabits to every megabyte.

If you're seeing a 3.8MBps download speed that's actually just over 30Mbps and would suggest you're getting more than you're supposed to. In other words, nothing is wrong, but internet speeds are confusing if you don't understand the units used and how to convert between them.

Steam has notoriously slow download times, you need to run a test at speedtest.net for an accurate reading.

I have 80mbps download on speedtest.net, but steam only shows me around 5mbps average.

I wasn't calling for tech support, I was calling to move service. Shouldn't have written that she said they stop working as well, that's not what she said. She said that "since the equipment is a rental we suggest you trade it in for our newer equipment when it is released. we release new modems about every 8 months and just updated all of our modems recently. older modems are less likely to hold speed and / or work as well. it's free to trade it in so i would suggest that."

If you are getting 3.8MBps (mega BYTES per second) down, and not just 3.8Mbps (mega BITS per second), then you are already maxing out your broadband connection speed.

This makes total sense :)

I will do a speed test when I get home and report.

Btw the equipment is brand new just hooked it up yesterday. I should have mentioned that.

I don't know about your service, but when I signed up for broadband here in my new place the ISP were at pains to inform us that it could take up to a week for their systems to optimise our connection speeds, and that we should wait and re-test after that time period before progressing issues about line speed. Our biggest problem though is distance from both the exchange and the cabinet, although a new cabinet was installed earlier in the year. When we were looking for serivce we could only find one provider that would offer their "normal" service, that is usually unlimited data for silly money, often free with line rental of £15.99 to us, everyone else wanted to give us their basic service, of only 1 Mb/s, yes one mega BIT per second, and to charge us an additional £10 per month for the privilege. We are currently supposed to be on an 8 Mb/s service, but even that is often difficult to achieve, and the line is forever dropping out. I guess that is the price you pay for living in the countryside, with views of a National Park from our windows (The park stats at the end of the properties on the other side of the lane).

Try running a speed test such as this (external link) one. It will give you a result of raw capability and return something like this.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.

I figured maybe after some time speed might change. Last place I lived we only had one option and of course they charged a lot for non HD channels and my internet was even slower then this. I was getting 2.6Mbps on steam.

I did do a speed test last night btw and I am getting

Download: 30.x Mbps
Upload: 6 Mbps
