I figured maybe after some time speed might change. Last place I lived we only had one option and of course they charged a lot for non HD channels and my internet was even slower then this. I was getting 2.6Mbps on steam.

I did do a speed test last night btw and I am getting

Download: 30.x Mbps
Upload: 6 Mbps

Sounds about right then!

You're getting a bit more than you're being sold and 30 divided by 8 is 3.75. Pretty close to what you're seeing on Steam.

I've used Steam for years and if you're looking for a program that will gladly eat up all your downstream bandwidth and keep it consistently full, Steam is one of them. I have a similar connection speed (I pay for 30/5 and get about 34-36 by 5.5 usually) and Steam will take up all of my downstream. I have wondered how much bandwidth you need to have to be beyond what Steam will use up.

I wasn't calling for tech support, I was calling to move service. Shouldn't have written that she said they stop working as well, that's not what she said. She said that "since the equipment is a rental we suggest you trade it in for our newer equipment when it is released. we release new modems about every 8 months and just updated all of our modems recently. older modems are less likely to hold speed and / or work as well. it's free to trade it in so i would suggest that."

Unless you are on Comcast Business with a static IP you can buy your own modem and save the monthly lease fee. It's super easy, all you have to do is unplug the old one and plug in the new one (make sure it is a supported modem (external link)) and let it sit for 20-30 minutes while it downloads any required firmware upgrade. You can then activate the modem (ie, add it to your existing account) via computer or by calling Comcast. I also have the 200 Mbps plan and with the modem (external link) I bought on Amazon I get 200+ Mbps consistently. Mine is a modem only as I didn't need/want router functionality from the Comcast modem/gateway.

If your current modem only has 4 downstream channels you may not always be able to get your full download speeds if there is congestion at times of peak activity in your neighborhood. Having more downstream channels can solve this. Newer modems have 16 and even 32 downstream channels.

Agreed, pays for itself inside a year and I haven't had a single service interruption since. I used to have issues where we would randomly drop our connection.

WiFi is a common problem.

Let's assume your Comcast connection is in good order and able to deliver it's rated throughput. You are then limited by your slowest device in the download chain. This could be the wireless connection between your computer and the wireless access point or could be your disk to which you are downloaing the file.

On my system when downloading to my traditional HDD (mechanical) I too get the speeds you are reporting. By comparison, I recently added an SSD drive to my computer and when I download to it I get significantly faster download speeds. Now I only download to the SSD.

A modern hard drive can do 120MBps, which is around 1000Mbps (B = byte, b - bit). Disk is very rarely a bottleneck for downloads.
