Thinking about upgrading my (very) trusty 40D.
Would still like something with a built-in flash (rarely use a flash, but handy to have).
Ability to shoot video.
I shoot a wide variety of subjects - but mainly sports, both indoors and out (waterskiing and wakeboarding, alpine skiing, dogs and kids running, indoor volleyball and basketball, martial arts, etc) so FAST and a wide ISO rating is a must.
While I'd like to go to FF, it's not a must.

Been looking at the original 7D due to the prices - is it enough of an upgrade over the 40D, or should I be looking at 7D Mark II (this is what I'm leaning toward).
So many to choose from 60D, 6D, etc - but I'd like to keep costs down as much as possible.

Lenses I use:

Nifty 50
Sigma 10-20
Tamron 17-502.8 (EF-S - which would have to be replaced is going to FF of course) Thinking of switching to the Canon 17-55 2.8 IS
Canon 100 2.8
Canon 70-200 F4L (thinking of going to the IS and MAYBE to 2.8)

Thanks for any advice / opinions!!

I have a photographic memory, just wish I'd remember to take the lens cap off more often!
1DXII - Canon 300 2.8 IS, 100-400 II, 70-200/2.8 II, 24-70 2.8 II, 85 1.8 - 1.4x II - F-Stop Lotus Backpack - ThinkTank Retrospective 20 & Speed Racer V2 - Peak Design Slide Flickr Collection (external link)

looks to me as if a 7DII would suit your needs

If you stick with aps-c bodies, you have a choices. The original 7D may be enough for you. Advantage: price. Both the 80D and 7DII have more to offer. The 7DII has slots (Cases) where you can store pre-configured AF options. The 80D has all the same options, but no slots (Cases) to store them in. The 7DII offers faster AF than the 80D, along with faster frame rate. Both have huge usable ISO ranges. ISO 12800 work from the 80D cleans up nicely. I am sure the 7DII is not a bunch different. At 6400, the original 7D is struggling with noise, and needs a lot of work. If you can go the $$, get a 7DII or 80D.

If you want to go with full frame, and you need to shoot action, your only Canon used options are 5D3/1DX. No Canon FF bodies before those have the AF and ISO to compete. If you have a rather large pile of money, consider the 5D4/1DX II.

One option you didn't mention is aps-h. The 1DIV will do sports/action very nicely. It is better than the original 7D at ISO 6400. It also has a higher frame rate (10 vs. 7 fps), and better AF in AI-Servo.

Lastly, don't forget that several of your lenses won't work on aps-h/FF.

Thanks for the info - yeah, I think I'll keep looking for the steal of a deal on 7DII (but I'm going to check out the 80D for sure as well...)

You say:

"I shoot a wide variety of subjects - but mainly sports, both indoors and out (waterskiing and wakeboarding, alpine skiing, dogs and kids running, indoor volleyball and basketball, martial arts, etc) so FAST and a wide ISO rating is a must."

This sounds very much like 7D2 country to me. Much as I like the 40D the 7D2 is in a completely different league for this sort of photography. A 7D would be an improvement over your 40D, but I don't think that you would be bowled over by the high ISO performance, the 7D2 is better here - well everywhere else as well!

If you can get the cash together then a 7D2 is definitely the better option, note I cannot speak for the 80D as I have never used one. From what I read the 7D2 looks to be the better sports/wildlife camera whilst the 80D is better for video and a very competent all round camera, so it is all down to your personal needs/wants.

Either would be fine and you will be delighted with them - the decision is which one suits you best...

Be prepared for a bit of head scratching! This is a VERY much more sophisticated and adaptable camera than your 40D.

Don't be afraid of it as straight out of the box it will blow your socks off! Later, when you have got more used to it, start investigating some of it's customization attributes so that you can get it to do what you want in the way that you want it to do it - hope that makes sense!

You will be very happy with your new toy!

Thanks! Expecting a "bit" of a learning curve for sure - will play with it in "idiot" mode for first little while and then maybe start exploring all of the sub-menus and programs... :)

I hope you aren't disappointed, not sure if the 7D2 can do high ISO, or sports ... .

It arrived today!!!!
Battery is charging as we speak.
New CF (Lexar Pro 1066x 32GB) and SD (SanDisk Extreme Pro 32GB) cards ready and waiting...
I will be ordering a vertical grip too - camera is about the same size as my old 40D - found it too small :)
I'm going to try one of the cheap-o ones first - one with wireless remote - my wife liked that feature - "hon, we'll be able to get better family shots with it!" ;)

Still looking for the 70/200 2.8II - have my eye on one, but gotta unload some of my other gear first...

^

So you joined in Feb with no real posts, and in the last 2 hours have made almost 20 small comments, how the 5D3 is better than the 7D2, then good call here on a 7D2 thread, etc. What equipment do you have, and what do you like to shoot? Do you have a 7D2? Just curious if you are willing to introduce yourself a bit, and if you have a 7D2, perhaps share some things with the new 7D2 owner that started this thread.

It arrived today!!!!

Did you check the firmware? Mine came with V1.0.5, Latest is 1.10. I have updated, but user manual is outdated. I am trying to get the latest in hardback. I have uploaded the PDF.
