If you hover over the 'banned' you'll see how long the ban is for. I can't say exactly why you still see them but in the case the ban is temporary it makes sense that their posts remain and even in the case of a permanent ban, past posts are likely still relevant and possibly helpful to the discussion.

It would be interesting to know why they were banned.

People get banned for not following the rules. Details beyond that might be interesting but what purpose could it serve? I'm sure the mod team has enough overhead without having to explain why a member was banned.

Of course it would, but I don't expect such questions to be answered. Often a person is banned for behavior in another thread than the one you're looking at, a thread you haven't seen, so that what you're reading seems perfectly innocent.

A ban will follow if a previously banned member is caught reregistering under a new name. I know of one case for sure because I spotted some very familiar features of a "new" member's writing style and turned him in.

Yes. This is very true. It is also the reason why it is often easy to surmise why people get banned. They tend to follow a certain pattern of behaviour. My guess is that very few bans happen without some kind of previous warning.

Just FYI, most times if the reason for a ban was posts on the forum, afterward you will not see the offending posts, as those are the ones that DO get removed.

So the vast majority of a banned members posts will be harmless, and thus left on the forum. Heck, some posts could be downright helpful. Never can tell.

Announcing reasons for bans would have downsides. For one, it would be unfair to the bannee. Imagine that a mod posts that you were banned for practicing witchcraft, wearing mismatched socks, and being generally obnoxious. You might want to dispute these charges in public ("I don't own any socks"), but you can't, because you're banned.

I think people are curious why someone with thousands of post is suddenly banned. The banned symbol suddenly appears over the users name. I am sure that when someone is banned the decision is not made lightly, but that doesn't keep you from wondering what the cause of the ban was.

He may have, silently and to himself. I never spotted the repeatedly banned ill-tempered ranter again.

When a lady has worked at the saloon for a while, she learns to spot a horse thief by the way he holds his whisky glass, even if he had a mustache last week and doesn't now.
