At first I thought this was like winning the lottery when I attached a 1.4iii on my 400 5.6 (it's the only lens I own now) and I was still able to autofocus all pts! Second I thought why not try with 2xiii and my camera is still autfocusing with all pts!!?? woohoo jackpot! I actually got a few useable images at 800mm in VERY bright sunlight.

After initial joy wore off, I soon wondered if my body autofocus's properly even without any extenders?? I think my keeper rate is slightly down from normal with pics not being as sharp as I think they should be..

Has anyone else experienced as similar 'malfunction'?

Lee

No, but it is the sort of "malfunction" that I could live with!

Life is for living, cameras are to capture it (one day I will learn how!).

Is the exposure correct? If it is, then does it report the proper aperture setting in the viewfinder? I presume not, in this case.

I believe Canon recommends mounting the TC to the lens, then mounting the entire combination to the camera. I've never had this make a difference, but it may matter to the 7DII.

EDIT for information:
I use 6D, 1DIV, 80D - 1.4X II and 2X II - 135L, 200 2.8II, 70-200 f/4 IS, 100-400Lc.

Great questions, as a matter of fact the aperture is not reporting correctly in the viewfinder, all of my shots have been on bright snow covered days. Images coming off the card seem to be exposed correctly requiring very minimal work in ppl

I am tempted to send the whole kit to Canon to troubleshoot.

Thx for the input.

Hey thanks for the input; I think I read the same as well, that being said I have mounted in all combinations with the same result.

The proper procedure is converter to lens, then combo to camera.
Lenses designed for converters have extra connecton pads at the mount. Perhaps one of the three extra is broken on your lens? You haven't tried with another lens (borrowed from somebody, since you seem to have only one at the moment)?

I too was expecting to be limited to just a few AF point options when adding a teleconverter to a 400mm lens. I also was expecting to lose a stop of light, which was more of a concern. Just received a used 400mm lens the other day. Did a quick test on this cloudy, rainy day with the 7D2, 400mm and canon 1.4x III converter. I have f/5.6 and all the AF points available. I can move the AF around as I please. As expected, AF'ing is slower with converter attached, but that doesn't bother me. I like the fact that AF can be manually overridden simply by turning the focus ring to help AF if needed. Sun might come out late today for better testing.
