Once you have pressed the AE lock button on the rear of the camera is there any way of cancelling AE lock or do you just have to wait for it to time out?
I use BBF and sometimes accidently hit the AE lock button instead of the AF on button..On my last camera I had both the AF button and AE lock button configured for BBF which I may do again but I was interested to know if there is a way of cancelling AE lock once it has been set..

Will pressing the focus point selection button cancel it?

You don't have to wait. From Canon:

If you’re in a hurry and don’t want to wait a few seconds for the reading to clear, press the AF point select button (right next to the AE Lock button, on the back of the camera), and then immediately let it go and press the shutter button again. You’re back to live metering that’s not locked in place.

Worked for my 5D3 but not for my 60D, at least not with my button configuration...

Simply change the Mode dial and the AE Lock immediately is released.

However, merely pressing the AE Lock again (even without a mode change) replaces the first lock reading with a new lock reading...no need to 'cancel' first.

The OP has a 1DX2 which I owned and understand the functionality so I was responding to that. Presently I own the 7D2 and 5D4. The AE lock cancellation works the same for those. My apologies but I'm not familiar with the 60D. I gave Google quick look but couldn't find anything. Maybe you should drop Canon support an email? They are usually good for those kind of queries.

Thanks for the replies guys.......As said by a couple of people, pushing the AF select button cancels out the AE lock.
Learn something everyday, many thanks...

Try the AF-point select button twice. That works for me with my 60D.

Nope, didn't work for me, I suspect that it has to do with the button configuration... I have center selection in the SET button.

Changing to another mode does it, but changing there and back, I might as well wait it out. Anyway, it never became an issue with me, I chimed in to provide information for the two Canon bodies that I own.

There is a better answer to all the ones above, at least on the 5DIII. I hope they haven't since removed it for the 5DIV or 1DXII.

In custom controls you can asign alternative actions to the AE lock button. One of these is AE Hold. This basically turns AE lock into an on/off toggle. Press the button and AE lock is activated and stays active (it won't time out). Press it again and it is immediately cancelled without having to wait for it to time out. So, any time you accidentally press it you can just press it again to cancel.

Thanks, Dan. I've been using Canon cameras for years, and never thought about how to use AEL(h). This works on my 6D, and 80D, but not on the 1DIV. I have to use the AF-select button on that body.

It's a feature that was introduced a few years ago. Thus not on the older 1D Mark IV.

Ah, but the * button is so much more useful on the 1DIV. I can be in M, f/11, center point only - Pressing the * button instantly puts me in Av, wide-open, using all 45 points. My 6D can't do THAT! Nor the 80D! (Honestly, I've never used it that way.)
