My friend and I visited a botanical garden and we really liked these flower shots.

I like the second better than the first. The first isn't from an angle that flatters her in my opinion. However the vignette on the left in the second is unfortunate.

I think it would be helpful, more than anything else, to point out that she is out of focus in both of these. Your AF has grabbed the flowers in front of her.

Focus-recompose or outer-area AF?

Agree with both of the above. The 2nd shot is the better photo for many reasons but she is out of focus on both shots.
