Hello all. I actually had a question. I want to make a beauty dish for my Dlites. I am looking a bowls on amazon and have found a few. My question is how deep of one should I look for. I have found one that 22 1/2in x 8in. However I have also found a 20"x 6". I like the 20" because I can find 20" honeycombs. However its got a very flat bottom and isnt very deep.

22 1/2" (external link)

I plan on getting a deflector kit for my elinchromes so I only need to cut the middle hole

I would avoid the flat bottom, try to find one that mirrors the look of the various OEM beauty dishes (ie. Profoto, Interfit, Elinchrom, etc). I'd be concerned about the flat shape negatively affecting the light.

That being said, I went the DIY route when I was new...and to be honest none of my attempts were able to remotely replicate the light of a proper, quality BD. My suggestion (considering the prices of the items you've listed) would be to just go on ebay and find a chinese knockoff of a beauty dish. There's a ton from what I see doing a quick search for $30-40 from 16" to 27", most have options for different mounts/speedrings. I think you'd probably be more pleased with the outcome if you went that route. If you're a do-it-yourselfer and the project is more for the fun of it then I stick with my original suggestion of just getting a bowl with a shallow parabola shape instead of large/flat bottom.

Thanks for the input. Most people Ive read or talked to say that the ebay dishes vs DIY, the DIY tends to come out better. Mind you most of these people are talking about speedlights no strobes
